Andrew Mangiapane Joins Blackhawks After Bold Trade Maneuver

The Chicago Blackhawks make a strategic move by acquiring Andrew Mangiapane, a forward with potential for resurgence, bringing fresh energy and depth to their lineup.

The Chicago Blackhawks made some moves at this year's trade deadline, parting with key players but gaining Andrew Mangiapane from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach, along with a conditional 2027 first-round draft pick. Mangiapane, who didn't quite find his groove with the Oilers, is looking to rejuvenate his career in Chicago.

Mangiapane’s Journey

Standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 183 pounds, Mangiapane was a sixth-round pick by the Calgary Flames in the 2015 Entry Draft. He began his NHL journey in the 2017-18 season and became a regular for the Flames by 2019-20.

His standout year came in 2021-22, when he netted 35 goals and 55 points, playing all 82 games. Though that season was exceptional, his usual stats hovered around 20 goals and 42 points.

After a stint with the Washington Capitals didn't pan out as expected, Mangiapane signed with the Oilers in 2025. However, with just seven goals and 14 points in 52 games, he struggled to find his place, averaging under 12 minutes of ice time.

Challenges in Edmonton

Mangiapane's time with the Oilers was marked by a lack of confidence and limited opportunities. Known for his two-way play, he was initially seen as a solid addition but eventually lost his spot to younger players. Despite his struggles, he remained a reliable presence, always willing to block shots and make smart plays.

A New Chapter in Chicago

In Chicago, Mangiapane is embracing a fresh start. At his introductory press conference, he expressed excitement about joining the Blackhawks and the welcoming atmosphere. While his contract was a salary dump for Edmonton, Chicago sees potential in his experience and two-way style.

Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill is giving Mangiapane a clean slate, recognizing his work ethic and speed. Blashill appreciates his direct, north-south style of play, which complements the team's strategy.

Early Impact

Since joining the Blackhawks, Mangiapane has played three games, starting on the fourth line but quickly moving up to the third line with veterans Ryan Donato and Ilya Mikheyev. He's already made his mark with two shots on goal, five hits, and three blocked shots, even scoring his first goal against the Utah Mammoth.

Blashill praised Mangiapane for his competitive nature and the energy he brings to the team. While his prime days with the Flames might be behind him, his resilience and gritty play style could prove valuable for the Blackhawks.

As Mangiapane settles into his role, the Blackhawks are hopeful that his experience and determination will contribute positively as they look ahead to the rest of the season and beyond.
