The Detroit Red Wings have locked up Alex DeBrincat on a seven-year extension, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Tuesday evening.
PuckPedia reported the deal is worth $13 million per season. DeBrincat, 28, was scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency after the 2026-27 season, but that path is off the table now.
DeBrincat is off to a fast start this year in Detroit, with four goals and eight points through six games. The 5-foot-8 right wing added to that total Tuesday night, scoring twice and assisting once in the Red Wings’ 5-4 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils.
For Detroit, the move keeps one of its top finishers in place after acquiring him from the Ottawa Senators in the summer of 2023. That trade sent Donovan Sebrango, Dominik Kubalik, a 2024 first-round pick, and a 2024 fourth-round pick to Ottawa. Later that offseason, DeBrincat signed a four-year deal with the Red Wings carrying a $7.875 million cap hit.
He rewarded that commitment in a big way during the 2025-26 regular season, matching his previous career high with 41 goals and setting a new personal best with 85 points in 82 games.
Now he’s tied to the Red Wings for the long haul, even as the team continues to deal with the difficult situations involving Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson.
DeBrincat’s career has been built on finishing ability from the start. The Chicago Blackhawks took him in the second round, No. 39 overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft. He spent his junior years with the OHL’s Erie Otters, where he skated alongside Connor McDavid and Dylan Strome, before making the jump to the NHL with Chicago in 2017-18.
He became a reliable scoring threat almost immediately, reaching 41 goals twice and helping the Blackhawks get to the playoffs in 2020 before Chicago dealt him to Ottawa in 2022.
In 702 career NHL games across parts of 10 seasons with the Blackhawks, Senators, and Red Wings, DeBrincat has 298 goals and 603 points. He also has two goals and six points in nine playoff games.

Anton Frondell Is Giving Blackhawks Fans A New Calder Storyline
Anton Frondell has quickly become one of the more interesting early-season developments for the Blackhawks, and not just because he is producing offense as a rookie. Working primarily as the second-line center, Frondell has been the teams rookie leader in points and assists to open the 2026-2027 season, while also showing the kind of faceoff work and defensive detail that coaches tend to notice fast. For a young player, that mix has already translated into real responsibility.
Jeff Blashill has clearly been willing to lean on him, giving Frondell meaningful ice time and even penalty kill duties as his role grows. That kind of trust says plenty about where he stands in the lineup, and it has pushed him into a Calder conversation that feels more substantial than a hot start. The bigger question now is how far that confidence can carry if his all-around game keeps matching the production. [Read more 🡒]
Connor Bedard's Return Gave Blackhawks Fans A Reason To Believe
Connor Bedards return gave the Blackhawks something they had been missing through the early part of this season: a familiar centerpiece back in the lineup. Chicago took advantage of the lift, beating the Penguins 5-3 behind two-goal nights from Roman Kantserov and Teuvo Teravainen, while Bedard also picked up his first point of the season in his comeback game.
For a team that entered the night at 1-5-0, the result was more than just a much-needed win. It was a reminder that the Blackhawks can still create momentum when their top young talent is on the ice, even as the larger questions around consistency and staying power remain very much alive.
