The Bears didn’t have much time to waste once they learned Coby Bryant’s injury timetable, and that urgency led them straight to Xavier Woods. The veteran safety arrived with the expectation that he could step in and start immediately, and according to Ben Johnson, he’s already looking like the kind of answer Chicago needed on the back end.
Johnson didn’t hold back when describing what Woods has brought to the group.

Woods has been with the team for barely a week, but he’s already working with the first team and drawing praise for how quickly he’s absorbed the defense. That kind of quick acclimation matters for a Bears secondary that needed someone who could walk in, process the scheme, and keep things steady.
The resume helps explain why Chicago was comfortable making the move. Woods enters his tenth NFL season with 121 career starts, 134 games played, and 8,143 defensive snaps on his ledger. He’s now with his fifth team and his third in as many years, which speaks to a player who has seen plenty, learned plenty, and knows how to get up to speed fast.
There are limits, of course. Woods turns 31 this season and missed six games last year because of injury, so Chicago isn’t pretending it found a perfect replacement for Bryant.
But the Bears don’t need him to be that. They need him to be stable, experienced, and ready to help right now.
That’s where the fit gets interesting. Rookie Dillon Thieneman is slated to start next to Woods, with the idea that the rookie can handle some of the physical work while Woods handles the mental side of the job. At the same time, the move lets Cam Lewis stay in the slot instead of being forced into a starting safety role.
It’s the kind of layered adjustment that can ripple through a defense in a good way.
The Bears have already shown a similar instinct elsewhere, moving quickly to trade for Garrett Bradbury after learning of veteran Drew Dalman’s retirement. In that case, they didn’t sit around and wait for the problem to get worse. They brought in a proven starter, and Bradbury has wasted no time settling in.
Chicago also drafted Logan Jones in the second round, but he does not appear to be pushing the veteran into the starting job right now. That’s part of the broader approach here: identify the issue, add an experienced player, and avoid letting the depth chart spiral.
If Woods keeps giving the Bears what Johnson is seeing now, the plan could work the same way on defense. And if it does, Chicago may have found a way to keep the injury hit from turning into something much bigger.
