The Green Bay Packers are putting the final touches on their coaching staff for 2026, and their latest move might raise a few eyebrows-especially in Chicago.
According to multiple reports, the Packers are promoting Luke Getsy to quarterbacks coach, filling the vacancy left by Sean Mannion, who recently took the offensive coordinator job with the Philadelphia Eagles. Getsy is no stranger to Green Bay or the NFC North. In fact, his resume reads like a tour through the division-with a few bumps along the way.
Getsy spent the 2023 and part of the 2024 seasons as an offensive coordinator, first with the Chicago Bears and then briefly with the Las Vegas Raiders. His time in Chicago was, to put it mildly, rocky.
Tasked with developing young quarterback Justin Fields, Getsy oversaw an offense that struggled to find its rhythm. In 2022, the Bears ranked 28th in total yards and 23rd in points scored.
While 2023 saw modest improvement-finishing 20th in yards and 18th in scoring-it wasn’t enough to quiet the critics.
Despite Fields earning MVP votes in 2022, the overall offensive production never matched the flashes of individual brilliance. Getsy was ultimately let go by Las Vegas midway through the 2024 season and returned to Green Bay last year as a senior offensive assistant.
Now, he steps into a critical role: overseeing the continued development of Jordan Love, who took a significant leap forward in 2025. The Packers are clearly betting on Getsy's familiarity with the system and the organization to help guide Love through the next phase of his growth. But with Getsy's track record in Chicago still fresh in the minds of NFC North fans, it’s fair to say this move will be watched closely.
For Bears fans, the irony isn’t lost. Getsy now holds the keys to the quarterback room for their oldest rival, and if his past struggles with Fields are any indication, Chicago might feel just fine about this development. After all, the Bears have had the upper hand in the rivalry lately-winning three of the last four matchups, including two out of three in 2025.
In a division where quarterback play often dictates the standings, Getsy’s ability-or inability-to get the most out of Jordan Love could have ripple effects across the NFC North. The Packers are betting on continuity.
The Bears? They’re probably just hoping history repeats itself.
