As the Cubs gear up for the 2026 season, fans are getting an exciting glimpse into the future with Jefferson Rojas making waves in spring training. This 20-year-old shortstop is turning heads as a non-roster invitee, showcasing his potential to become a key player for the Cubs.
Rojas, who was on the fringes of MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects at No. 97 last year, didn't have the breakout season he hoped for in Double-A. But the raw talent is undeniable, and he's been making a statement early in the Cactus League.
In a recent matchup against the Kansas City Royals, Rojas launched a solo home run off right-handed reliever Luinder Avila, sending a 96 mph fastball soaring 413 feet with an exit velocity of 107.5 mph. It was the hardest-hit ball by a Cubs player in that game, with only Bobby Witt Jr. making harder contact.
Through four spring training games, Rojas has logged three hits in eight at-bats, and his quality of contact is turning heads. That home run against the Royals marked his fourth batted ball with an exit velocity over 100 mph in just eight at-bats.
Ranked No. 3 in the Cubs’ minor league system, Rojas is climbing the ranks of MLB prospects. FanGraphs rates him highly, placing him at No. 55 on their top-100 list for 2026, while The Athletic’s Keith Law lists him at No. 79.
Rojas’ journey through 2025 was a mixed bag. He impressed with the South Bend Cubs, slashing .278/.379/.492, hitting 11 home runs, and stealing 14 bases in 67 games. However, the transition to Double-A proved challenging, as he posted a .485 OPS in 39 games post-All-Star break.
As Rojas heads into his second stint at Double-A, a strong spring could be just what he needs to boost his confidence. It’s crucial to remember that at just 20 years old, Rojas is playing against peers nearly four years his senior, making his achievements all the more impressive. Cubs fans have every reason to be excited about this young talent's future.
