Minnesota's QB Shakeup Sparks Heated Debate

Despite a promising start to his NFL career, former Michigan standout J.J. McCarthy faces new challenges as he's repositioned in the Vikings' quarterback lineup ahead of their season opener.

J.J. McCarthy’s path in Minnesota just took another sharp turn.

Kevin O’Connell said Wednesday that the former Michigan quarterback has been dropped to third on the Vikings’ depth chart heading into Sunday’s Week 1 matchup with the Green Bay Packers. McCarthy will now back up Carson Wentz, while Wentz sits behind Kyler Murray, who is listed as Minnesota’s starter.

O’Connell made clear the Vikings are treating the quarterback situation as something that can shift from week to week. The coach said the team will keep evaluating McCarthy and Wentz before deciding who holds the job going forward.

"Carson, he’s got almost 100 career starts. What he did last year, with very limited reps, was apply a career's worth of experience.

That’s kinda what you need to do as a backup quarterback," O'Connell told reporters. "J.J., he is still going to get a bunch of great work. ...

I'm really excited to have the chance to continue working with him."

The move comes after Minnesota signed Murray in March, following his seven-year run with the Arizona Cardinals. That signing immediately put McCarthy’s standing in the organization under the microscope, and it set up a training camp battle that McCarthy ultimately lost.

Minnesota used the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on McCarthy, bringing in a quarterback who arrived with major buzz after leading Michigan to the 2023 National Championship title. But the early NFL ride has been bumpy.

McCarthy went 6-4 as the Vikings’ starter in 2025, throwing for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He had flashes that hinted at why the Vikings believed in him, but injuries have repeatedly interrupted his development.

He missed five straight games last season with a high ankle sprain, then lost more time to a concussion and a hairline fracture in his throwing hand. His rookie year in 2024 never got off the ground at all because of a torn meniscus.

"I want to make this week-to-week, so when we feel like we need to declare something different, we can," O'Connell said. "This gives us the best chance to win this Sunday, based on how the game goes."

Bears Suddenly Have A WR Problem After Moving On From DJ Moore

The Bears moved on from DJ Moore with a clear plan to restock the offense through the draft, turning his departure into a bet on youth and depth. Chicago used the picks it got back from Buffalo to select Sam Roush and Keyshaun Elliott, while also leaning on Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III to help carry the receiving load in the post-Moore picture.

Now the early stages of training camp have put that plan under a little more pressure. Odunze has dealt with ongoing injury issues, and for a receiver room that was supposed to help make the Moore trade look like a forward-thinking move, every missed practice matters. The Bears still have time to sort it out, but the margin for error at wideout is suddenly thinner than it looked when they dealt their most established target away. [Read more 🡒]

Bears Week 1 Depth Chart Raises Early Questions Before Carolina

The Bears have put out their first official depth chart of the season, and as expected it offers an early snapshot of how the roster is lining up for the opener against Carolina. It sorts out starters and backups across every position, while also reflecting the injury situations and planned roles the team is juggling as it gets ready for Week 1.

For a club trying to settle into a rhythm right away, the chart is less about final answers than about where the questions still are. Chicago expects most of its key players to be available, but the way the staff has organized the lineup suggests there are still a few spots worth watching as the Bears head into their matchup with the Panthers. Bears Week 1 Injury Report Leaves Key Offensive Spots Unsettled

The Bears opened their 2026 regular season week with an injury report that already has a few important offensive spots in flux before they line up against the Panthers. Rome Odunze showed up as limited in practice with a calf injury, while Tyson Bagent and left tackle Ozzy Trapilo were also listed among the teams players working through injury issues as Chicago began sorting out availability for Sunday.

Odunze is expected to play if his condition improves, but the bigger concern for Chicago may be how much uncertainty remains around the other two spots. Bagents status leaves the backup quarterback picture unsettled, and Trapilos availability matters for an offensive line that needs every healthy body it can get this early in the season. [Read more 🡒]
