Monangai's Meteoric Rise in the Bears' Backfield
When the Chicago Bears snagged Kyle Monangai in the seventh round out of Rutgers, not many fans anticipated the impact he'd have on the field. But by the end of his rookie season, Monangai had carved out a significant role in Chicago’s backfield, turning heads with his impressive performance.
Standing at 5-foot-8 and weighing in at 207 pounds, Monangai defied expectations with his physical style of play. He carried the ball 169 times, racking up 783 yards and five rushing touchdowns. These numbers placed him fifth among rookie running backs for rushing yards, a remarkable feat considering he wasn't the primary back.
Monangai quickly became a familiar name in Chicago, thanks to his relentless running style and ability to break through defenses.
Reflecting on a Breakout Season
In a recent appearance on "The Pete And Sebastian Show," Monangai shared insights from his first year in the NFL. One topic of interest was whether defenders engaged in trash talk after attempting to tackle him. Monangai revealed that while he wasn't one for smack talk, he could tell when his hard-nosed running was wearing down opponents.
"They don’t want to let me know that I got them,” Monangai explained. “But I know.
You can read body language. They struggle when it takes four, five to take me down.”
His stats back up this assertion. According to Pro Football Focus, Monangai averaged 3.0 yards after contact per attempt and forced 25 missed tackles, showcasing his ability to make life difficult for defenders.
Adapting to the NFL's Complexity
Monangai also discussed the challenges of adapting to the NFL, particularly Ben Johnson’s complex playbook. He admitted that there were moments when, after breaking the huddle, he wasn’t entirely sure of his assignment.
“You may not know the totality of our playbook and how in-depth it is,” Monangai said. “As I’ve gone further in my career and now at the highest level, playbooks don’t get easier. They get harder.”
Transitioning from college to the pros came with its hurdles, especially moving from sideline signals to understanding verbal play calls in loud stadiums. Monangai praised Caleb Williams for his clear communication, which has been crucial in high-pressure situations.
As Monangai continues to develop, Bears fans have plenty to be excited about. His rookie season was just the beginning, and if his early performances are any indication, Monangai is poised to be a key player in Chicago for years to come.
