The Chicago Bears find themselves in an intriguing position this offseason. After making significant strides in 2025, particularly with their offensive line, the focus now shifts to the defensive side of the ball. Yet, that doesn't mean the Bears won't consider shaking things up on offense if the right opportunity arises.
One potential move on the horizon involves veteran wide receiver DJ Moore. At 28, Moore's performance dipped this past season despite signing a hefty four-year, $110 million extension in July 2024. With emerging talents like Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III stepping up, and the addition of promising rookie tight end Colston Loveland, Moore's role in the offense could be in question.
Moore posted 50 receptions on 85 targets for 682 yards and six touchdowns. While his touchdown count remained steady, his receptions and targets saw significant declines. This wasn't what the Bears envisioned when they extended his contract, especially with the newfound depth in their receiving corps.
During the NFL Scouting Combine, Bears GM Ryan Poles addressed Moore’s future, stating, “We want him here. We think highly of him … But this is the time now where we have to look at all the scenarios that will allow us to put the best team out there…he’s a guy we want here but we have to look at all the scenarios.”
Poles’ comments, while supportive, leave room for interpretation. The Bears aren’t about to tip their hand on any potential trade involving Moore, as maintaining leverage is key. Yet, the acknowledgment of exploring all scenarios suggests that Moore's future with the team is far from certain.
Financially, trading Moore before June 1 could provide the Bears with $16.5 million in cap savings for 2026, and further savings through 2029. However, they would incur $12 million in dead money for the upcoming season, a figure that would decrease over subsequent years.
The Bears aren't likely to offload Moore just because they have rising stars like Odunze, Burden III, and Jahdae Walker. But if an enticing offer comes their way, perhaps involving quality draft picks or a defensive asset, it could be enough to sway their decision.
As the offseason unfolds, the Bears will be keen to build on their 2025 success. How they navigate the situation with DJ Moore will be a storyline worth watching.
