The Washington Commanders are taking a close look at Al Harris as they search for their next defensive coordinator - and they’re not alone. Harris, currently the Bears’ defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, is also set to interview with the Green Bay Packers this week for the same role. It’s a busy stretch for the veteran coach, and it’s no surprise teams are lining up.
At 51, Harris brings a wealth of experience to the table - both as a player and as a coach. He entered the league as a sixth-round pick back in 1997, and carved out a 15-year NFL career that saw him suit up for five teams: the Buccaneers, Eagles, Packers, Dolphins, and Rams.
Known for his physical style and lockdown ability at corner, Harris earned a reputation as one of the grittiest defenders of his era. That edge has carried over into his coaching.
After hanging up his cleats, Harris broke into coaching in 2012 with the Dolphins as an intern - a humble start for a guy who’d seen it all on the field. From there, he climbed the ladder with stints in Kansas City, a season at Florida Atlantic, and a key role with the Cowboys, where he became defensive backs coach in 2020. His leadership and presence on the sideline didn’t go unnoticed; he was later promoted to Assistant Head Coach while continuing to guide the secondary.
In 2023, Harris joined the Bears’ staff, taking on the dual role of defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator. It was a significant step, giving him more influence over the structure and strategy of the defense - and now, it’s opening doors.
Both Washington and Green Bay are looking for a tone-setter on defense, and Harris fits that bill. He brings a player’s mindset, a coach’s discipline, and a track record of developing talent in the secondary. His name might not be the flashiest on the market, but for teams looking to build a tough, smart, and aggressive defense, Harris is a name to watch.
