Chris Murphy Battles For Bullpen Spot Amid Intense Spring Training Competition

Can Chris Murphy solidify his role in the White Sox bullpen amid stiff competition and a crucial need for left-handed depth?

As Spring Training unfolds, the White Sox find themselves in a unique position compared to recent years. With much of the 26-man roster seemingly set, the focus shifts to a few key positional battles, particularly for backup roles in the infield, outfield, and bullpen.

One intriguing storyline is the competition among relief pitchers, especially with Chris Murphy in the spotlight. Acquired in an early November trade from the Boston Red Sox, where catching prospect Ronny Hernandez was sent the other way, Murphy's presence adds depth to the bullpen.

Murphy's track record with the Red Sox is promising. In his two major-league seasons, he boasts a career 4.15 ERA over 82 innings.

His 2025 performance was particularly noteworthy, featuring a 3.12 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 34 innings in 23 games. Opponents struggled against him, batting just .172, while he notched 30 strikeouts.

As a left-handed pitcher, these numbers are precisely why the White Sox brought him on board.

Initially, Murphy seemed a lock for the bullpen. However, recent developments have stirred the pot, with a flurry of bullpen activity potentially jeopardizing his spot. The White Sox already have six arms penciled in for the bullpen, not counting two Rule-5 draft picks who carry the advantage of needing to make the roster to avoid being lost.

Murphy’s left-handedness is a significant asset, given that Sean Newcomb is the only other lefty assured a bullpen position. So far in Spring Training, Murphy has had mixed results.

Before today, he allowed two runs over three innings, striking out one. In today's game against the Dodgers, Murphy pitched three innings, surrendering five hits and two runs while striking out three.

While the hit count is a concern, the strikeouts are a positive sign.

Murphy remains a key contender for a bullpen spot, and his fate may rest on his upcoming performances. With Chris Getz having prioritized acquiring him, Murphy's chances of making the roster stand at about 40%.

However, a few strong outings could significantly boost those odds. The next few weeks will be crucial as Murphy looks to solidify his place on the team.
