The Chicago Bears have been active in free agency, but there's still work to be done to solidify their roster. General Manager Ryan Poles has made some key moves, yet the defense remains an area of concern that needs addressing.
The cornerback position is particularly pressing. In today's pass-heavy NFL, having dependable corners is crucial. ESPN's Bill Barnwell pointed out that while the Bears have made strides, they still need to land a top-tier cornerback to complete their offseason strategy.
Barnwell noted, "On defense, there’s still work to be done. Poles admitted that the Bears were interested in trading for Maxx Crosby, and Chicago could still add another pass rusher. But for now, the pursuit of a star edge rusher appears to be on the back burner."
The Bears have made some changes, releasing Tremaine Edmunds and bringing in Devin Bush from the Browns. In the secondary, they've swapped out Jaquan Brisker, C.J.
Gardner-Johnson, and Kevin Byard III for Super Bowl winner Coby Bryant and former Bills safety Cam Lewis. Despite these moves, Barnwell emphasized the need for a starting cornerback and a safety who can play in the box before the 2026 season kicks off.
With plenty of time left in free agency and the offseason, the Bears have the opportunity to strengthen their defense and find the right fit for their needs.
