The Chicago Bears find themselves in a bit of a financial bind with just $243,000 in cap space, making free-agent signings a challenge right now. However, with some strategic contract restructuring and extensions, there's still room for maneuvering before the 2026 NFL Draft. Among the potential targets is a familiar face for head coach Ben Johnson: offensive tackle Taylor Decker.
Taylor Decker, a seasoned left tackle since entering the NFL in 2016, could be a game-changer for the Bears. Despite having only one Pro Bowl nod in 2024, Decker's reliability is well-documented. With the Bears recently acquiring Jedrick Wills Jr., who’s been sidelined since 2024 due to a knee injury, and releasing former starter Braxton Jones, there’s a clear need for a steady presence on the offensive line.
The Bears' current left tackle situation is a bit precarious. Their 2025 second-round pick, Ozzy Trapilo, is expected to miss a significant portion of the 2026 season due to injury.
This leaves them with Braxton Jones, Theo Benedet, and the newly signed Wills Jr. vying for the spot. Jones, familiar with Johnson’s offensive system and boasting more experience, is the current frontrunner.
However, adding Decker to the mix could shift the dynamics significantly.
Decker’s familiarity with Johnson’s scheme, which he thrived in from 2022 to 2024, makes him an enticing option. His proven track record within this system could provide the Bears with the stability and performance they need at left tackle. If Decker joins the roster, it could be a reunion that strengthens the Bears' offensive line and gives them a much-needed boost heading into the new season.
