The Chicago Bears are keenly aware that their pass rush needs a serious upgrade if they’re aiming for a Super Bowl run. With general manager Ryan Poles and defensive coordinator Dennis Allen at the helm, they’re tasked with finding the right solutions.
The team has faced setbacks with Dayo Odeyingbo’s torn Achilles and Shemar Turner’s ACL injury. Plus, Dominique Robinson is entering free agency.
This leaves the Bears with Montez Sweat and Austin Booker, highlighting a lack of star power and depth in their defensive lineup. There’s buzz that Allen might tap into his network to bring in a familiar face: Cameron Jordan.
Jordan has built a Hall of Fame-worthy career with the New Orleans Saints, racking up 132 sacks over 15 seasons. With free agency looming and the Saints not in a competitive phase, Jordan might be contemplating his next move.
Could he be lured to Chicago to chase the elusive championship ring? Adam Jahns of CHGO suggests Allen may indeed try to recruit the veteran defensive end, who could significantly bolster the Bears’ pass rush.
Jordan’s recent performance shows he’s still got it. At 36, he notched 10.5 sacks last season, proving age hasn’t slowed him down.
His remarkable durability, having missed only one game in his career, speaks to his toughness and self-care. Known for his outspoken, edgy demeanor, he fits the mold of players Chicago seems to favor, much like C.J.
Gardner-Johnson last year.
The main hurdle could be the cost. With Chicago’s limited cap space, Jordan’s market value is pegged at around $6.8 million. A one-year deal in the $7-8 million range could be feasible, allowing the Bears to avoid long-term financial commitment while potentially enhancing their pass rush significantly.
But signing Jordan would just be the beginning.
Poles might also look to the draft, possibly picking a defensive player in the first round. This strategy has been successful for other teams.
The Packers, for instance, found great success in 2019 with Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, and Rashan Gary, leading them to consecutive NFC championships. Similarly, the Vikings’ pairing of Jonathan Greenard and Dallas Turner helped them achieve a 14-3 record in 2024.
The Bears could follow this blueprint to strengthen their defense.
Year Team Free Agent Signed 1st Round Pick Drafted
2024 Vikings Jonathan Greenard Dallas Turner
2024 Dolphins Calais Campbell Chop Robinson
2023 Raiders Jordan Willis Tyree Wilson
2022 Jaguars Arden Key Travon Walker
2022 Jets Jacob Martin Jermaine Johnson II
2019 Packers Za’Darius Smith / Preston Smith Rashan Gary
2015 Jaguars Jared Odrick Dante Fowler Jr.
Adding Jordan would provide an immediate lift, giving Allen the chance to develop a rookie without rushing them into action. Alternatively, the Bears might explore options for a defensive tackle to enhance their front line. The challenge will be convincing Jordan, who’s spent his entire career with one team, to make the switch to Chicago.
