Bulls' Playoff Hopes Dashed as Thunder Surge
The Chicago Bulls faced another tough night, marking their third loss by 18 or more in the last five games. Despite leading for much of the game, the Oklahoma City Thunder unleashed a staggering 22-0 run, capitalizing on a rough outing from Josh Giddey in a Bulls uniform, and ultimately securing a 131-113 victory.
This defeat officially knocks Billy Donovan's squad out of playoff contention, extending their decade-long drought beyond the first round. Under the leadership of Arturas Karnisovas and Billy Donovan, the Bulls have only made the playoffs once, with a 1-4 record.
It's clear that fans are eager for a shake-up in the front office.
A Season of Struggles
Chicago fans have long suspected the playoffs were out of reach. The trade deadline saw a major overhaul, with seven deals signaling the front office's frustration with mediocrity and missing the main playoff bracket. Karnisovas's comments about avoiding the middle of the pack felt ironic, especially since the Bulls are still poised to finish outside the top eight in the draft lottery, likely picking in the middle of the first round.
Eyes on the Draft
According to Tankathon, the Bulls have a 76.6% chance of landing the ninth or tenth pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Unfortunately, a few wins post-trade deadline have hurt their chances for a higher pick.
The Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Pelicans, and Memphis Grizzlies, with fewer wins, have nearly double the odds of a top-four pick. Ideally, swapping places with Dallas would have been beneficial, as they boast a 37.2% chance at a top-four selection compared to Chicago's 20.2%, and a 58.9% chance of selecting between picks six and eight.
In a draft class full of talent, any improvement in draft position could be transformative.
Draft Decisions Ahead
With Donovan's resistance to tanking and Matas Buzelis leading the Bulls to a few morale-boosting wins, the team now faces a challenging decision with their draft pick, likely just outside the range of elite prospects. As the Bulls wrap up another season without postseason action or significant future gains, questions about Karnisovas’s leadership are inevitable.
With the likelihood of picking ninth or tenth, which prospect do you think should don a Bulls jersey next season?
