Braxton Jones Return Signals Bigger Bears Plan

Bears' faith in Braxton Jones signals a strategic move to protect quarterback Caleb Williams amidst lineup changes.

The Chicago Bears have made a strategic move by bringing back Braxton Jones on a one-year, $5 million deal. With starting left tackle Ozzy Trapilo sidelined by a serious injury and Theo Benedet not quite ready to step up, Jones' return provides stability to the offensive line.

Last season, injuries and inconsistent play saw Jones lose his starting position. However, he's now positioned as a reliable option while Trapilo recuperates.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson remains optimistic about Jones' potential as a long-term solution at left tackle. Johnson expressed confidence in Jones, noting that his early performances last season didn't truly reflect his capabilities, particularly given his recovery from injury.

Johnson remarked, "He looks yoked up. I know he’s very determined to get his career trajectory back to where it was before."

For the Bears, protecting franchise quarterback Caleb Williams is paramount. Last offseason, general manager Ryan Poles focused on revamping the offensive line, reducing sacks from 4.0 per game in 2024 to just 1.3 in 2025.

Despite drafting Trapilo, the Bears' decision to start Jones indicates their belief in his abilities. They saw him as competent enough to manage the position while nurturing their rookie talent.

Jones is now fully recovered, eliminating any room for excuses. In his limited 210 snaps last season, he allowed 15 pressures, including two sacks and two QB hits, according to Pro Football Focus.

Yet, his past performances demonstrate his potential when healthy. In 2023, he allowed just 32 pressures and only two sacks, showcasing his capability as a dependable blindside protector.

As the Bears focus on keeping Williams safe, Jones will be under the spotlight this season, especially if Trapilo's recovery takes longer than expected. With Johnson's endorsement, Jones has the opportunity to solidify his role and contribute significantly to the Bears' offensive success in 2026.
