Ben Johnson Stuns With Another Bold Draft Decision

Ben Johnson's ongoing pursuit of top talent at the tight end position could reshape the Chicago Bears' draft strategy as they eye Utah standout Dallen Bailey.

Chicago Bears fans, get ready for some intriguing draft developments. It seems like GM Ryan Poles and head coach Ben Johnson have a penchant for certain positions, with Poles favoring cornerbacks and Johnson showing a clear interest in tight ends. Over the past few years, the Bears have invested significantly in this area, notably with Sam LaPorta in 2023 and Colston Loveland in 2025.

Heading into the 2026 draft, many assumed the Bears were set at tight end. However, recent buzz suggests otherwise.

The team is reportedly eyeing Utah's Dallen Bailey, indicating they might add another talent to the mix alongside Loveland and Cole Kmet. With this year's draft class being particularly deep at tight end, Johnson, a former tight ends coach, seems eager to capitalize on the opportunity.

The Bears' decision not to re-sign Durham Smythe, who filled the third tight end role last season, further suggests a strategic move. Smythe's departure to Baltimore leaves a gap, hinting that Chicago is planning to fill it through the draft rather than free agency.

Dallen Bailey's rise is noteworthy. After starting his Utah career in a blocking role, he broke out last year with 640 yards and six touchdowns. With solid size, speed, and reliable hands, Bailey mirrors Kmet's skill set, offering versatility and potential for the Bears' offense.

But Bailey isn’t the only tight end on Chicago's radar. With seven picks in the draft, but only three on day three, expect some maneuvering from Poles to snag additional picks, particularly in the 5th and 6th rounds where Bailey is projected to land.

Coach Johnson's preference for tight ends who excel in both pass-catching and blocking is clear. Loveland and Kmet fit this mold, and adding Bailey could enhance Chicago's already potent 12 personnel (two tight end) formations, and perhaps even explore the rare 13 personnel (three tight end) sets.

Bears fans, buckle up. This draft could bring some exciting new dimensions to the offense.
