Ben Johnson wasted no time answering Liam Coen’s Caleb Williams jab with a line that fit the moment perfectly.
The Bears coach was responding after the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Liam Coen appeared to take an unintentional shot at Chicago and Williams while talking about his own team through NFL Insider Ari Meirov. Coen said, "I look at the NFL website, and see if there's anything on the Jaguars.
I think I'll see 40 pictures of Caleb Williams. And nothing on us!
It's beautiful."
The point Coen seemed to be making was clear enough: he wanted to cast the Jaguars as the overlooked team. But in doing that, he dragged Williams into the conversation, and Johnson didn’t let that slide.
"“Well, we’re the No. 1 regression candidate, so I think we’ve got plenty of motivation ourselves. We’ve talked about Caleb in the past. He’s used to handling a lot of attention, so I’m not worried about that.”"
That answer did two things at once. It pushed back on the idea that Chicago needs extra outside fuel, and it reminded everyone that the Bears have already been tagged by pundits as a team that could take a step back.
