Bears' Travis Etienne Linked to Unexpected Rival as Free Agency Looms

As the Chicago Bears weigh their options for 2026, a surprise interest from the Kansas City Chiefs adds intrigue to their pursuit of star running back Travis Etienne.

As NFL free agency looms, the buzz in Chicago centers around how the Bears might strengthen their squad for a deeper playoff push in 2026. The consensus among fans is clear: enhancing the pass rush and securing key free agents in the secondary are top priorities. While running back isn't a glaring issue, the possibility of upgrading shouldn't be dismissed outright.

Rumors have been swirling, with Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports suggesting the Bears might pursue Travis Etienne if he becomes available. To make room for such a move, Chicago would need to part ways with D’Andre Swift, fresh off a stellar 1,000-plus yard season in 2025.

However, the plot thickens as the Kansas City Chiefs reportedly express "legitimate interest" in Etienne, according to Pete Sweeney of the Kansas City Star. The Chiefs find themselves in a more urgent situation, lacking a clear RB1 for the upcoming season.

The Bears' interest in Etienne initially raised eyebrows, especially given Swift's impressive performance last season, bolstered by an improved offensive line and playcaller. Swift, alongside rookie Kyle Monangai, powered the Bears to the third-best rushing attack in the league, averaging 144.5 yards per game. With Swift set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026 season, cutting him could free up $7.5 million in cap space, with only $1.3 million in dead money, per OverTheCap.

This cap flexibility could allow the Bears to pursue Etienne, who is expected to command a contract surpassing Javonte Williams' recent three-year, $24 million deal with $16 million guaranteed from the Cowboys.

For Bears GM Ryan Poles, the decision to engage in a bidding war with the Chiefs for Etienne is complex. With pressing needs on defense, particularly in the safety and pass rush departments, prioritizing a high-stakes battle for a running back might not be the wisest move.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, face their own financial challenges, sitting over $11.3 million above the cap limit, according to OverTheCap. Despite this, their lack of standout names in the RB room might drive them to make a compelling offer for Etienne.

While adding Etienne would be a significant boost, the Bears have already demonstrated their ability to dominate on the ground with their current roster. Whether or not Etienne dons a Bears jersey, Chicago fans have plenty to be optimistic about regarding the team’s offensive prospects in the coming season.
