Tyson Bagent’s hamstring injury has put the Bears’ preseason quarterback plan on pause, and now Chicago has a decision to make before Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Bagent apparently picked up the injury during Saturday’s preseason matchup with the Cleveland Browns. He wasn’t seen at practice after Monday’s off day, and his availability for this weekend is now uncertain.

The timing matters because Bagent was set to continue his preseason showcase. Instead, that spotlight may shift elsewhere for now. Still, there’s no team confirmation yet, so it’s hard to read too much into the early reports.
Bagent’s showing against Cleveland was uneven. He finished 12 of 22 for 169 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception. Even so, he was only expected to play the first half, which meant Case Keenum taking over later wasn’t out of the ordinary.
That makes the injury more of a question mark than a verdict. The Bears have no reason to push him back onto the field if he isn’t ready, especially with his place in the organization already established.
Bagent has become a prized backup since arriving in Chicago, and he was the first Bears quarterback to receive an extension since Jay Cutler over a decade ago. He’s also drawn trade interest from multiple teams, though general manager Ryan Poles has set a steep price.
If Bagent sits this week, the focus turns to Keenum, who brings plenty of experience of his own. The former undrafted free agent from 2012 has stayed in the league for a long time, and he’d be the natural next man up.
For the Bears, the bigger issue isn’t Saturday’s result. It’s making sure Caleb Williams’ primary backup is healthy and ready when the games count. Chicago can be patient now, but it can’t head into the regular season unsure about that spot.

Bears Just Turned Two Last Roster Battles Into Tough Decisions
The Bears have started trimming the edges of their roster picture with a pair of moves that say plenty about how the final week of decisions is shaping up. Chicago added edge rusher Marcus Davenport and defensive back Denatre Prince, while moving on from running back Coleman Bennett and tight end Nikola Kalinic, a set of transactions that helps sharpen the competition in a couple of crowded spots.
Coleman Bennett had been part of a four-man battle for the third running back job, so his departure narrows that race and puts more pressure on the remaining contenders to separate themselves before the roster is set. Kalinics release with an injury designation brings another layer of uncertainty to the tight end group, and with those two situations now clarified, the Bears can move deeper into the final phase of roster choices. Malik Muhammad Just Crashed A Bears Battle That Suddenly Matters
The Bears got an early look at a couple of training camp names in the preseason opener, and Malik Muhammad was right in the middle of it. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen used the game to see how standouts like Jordan van den Berg and Muhammad would hold up when the speed and spacing changed, which is usually where camp buzz either hardens into a role or fades back into the depth chart.
Muhammads appeal is obvious for Chicago, because the cornerback picture is still unsettled by injuries and uneven play. He took on multiple responsibilities in that first test and showed enough promise to stay in the conversation, even with the kind of rough edges that come with a young defender trying to prove he can be trusted when the games start to count.
