The NFL free agency period is in full swing, and the Chicago Bears are feeling the effects with the departure of a key player. Devin Duvernay, previously a wide receiver and standout special teams returner for the Bears, has inked a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals worth $2.5 million.
While Duvernay's impact as a receiver was limited last season, with just two catches for 26 yards, his prowess in the return game was undeniable. He tallied 40 kickoff returns, averaging 26.7 yards, and 21 punt returns with an average of 11 yards.
Duvernay's stint in Chicago was brief, primarily contributing as a return specialist. However, he did see some action as a receiver late in the season due to injuries to Rome Odunze and Luther Burden. Despite his departure, the Bears seem prepared to move forward.
Enter Kalif Raymond, who joins Chicago on a one-year contract after his time with the Detroit Lions. Raymond brings versatility, having notched 289 receiving yards and a touchdown last season, along with a punt return for a score. Bears head coach Ben Johnson, familiar with Raymond from his tenure as the Lions' offensive coordinator, is well aware of the dynamic skill set Raymond offers.
For Bears fans, Raymond represents an exciting upgrade. His ability to contribute both in the slot and on special teams adds a new dimension to Chicago's offense. While Odunze and Burden remain the primary targets, Raymond's addition promises to bolster the Bears' offensive depth and special teams unit.
