The Chicago Bears’ first depth chart of the 2026 regular season offered an early clue about how they may sort out a messy secondary, and the nickel spot looks like the one to watch.
On paper, Chicago listed Cam Lewis as the top nickel back and Xavier Woods as a starting safety. But that may not be the full story. Both Brad Briggs of the Chicago Tribune and Courtney Cronin of ESPN pointed out that the listing doesn’t necessarily lock in the Bears’ actual plan.

We'll see,” tweeted Briggs.
Cronin made a similar point while sharing the Bears’ unofficial Week 1 depth chart for Carolina:

The timing is notable because both reporters hinted at the possibility of a rotation in the nickel. Lewis appears to have a real shot to open there, but there’s also a path for him to move to safety, a spot he has worked at in practice.
If that happens, rookie Malik Muhammad could be the one pushed into the nickel mix.
Chicago’s original plan was different. Kyler Gordon was supposed to handle the slot and Coby Bryant was lined up to play safety, but both are expected to miss the majority of the season. That has left the Bears piecing things together as they go.
Lewis came in as depth at safety before moving into the slot. Woods arrived after the injuries. Muhammad, meanwhile, is a rookie who played outside in college, so a full-time move into the slot would be a major adjustment for him.
For now, the Bears don’t seem to have a clean answer. That’s why the depth chart and the reporting around it point toward split snaps, at least for the moment. The remaining question is how long that rotation lasts before Chicago settles on one plan.
