Bears Roster Battle Is Turning In Favor Of Two Overlooked Defenders

Two unsung heroes on the Chicago Bears' defensive line are making a compelling case for their place on the team after a standout preseason performance.

The Chicago Bears got their first preseason look, and one position battle is already starting to take shape: defensive tackle. The opener pointed to two names who may be sitting on firmer ground than expected, with Kentavius Street and James Lynch both making their case.

Street looked like the clear next man up while veteran Grady Jarrett was out. He opened with the starting defense and logged eight snaps before getting pulled alongside Gervon Dexter and the rest of the starters. After that, Neville Gallimore and Jordan van den Berg took over.

That usage matters. Gallimore, the veteran free-agent signing, and van den Berg, the rookie draft pick, each played 28 snaps.

They were on the field for the same workload and came off at roughly the same time, which makes them look like the fourth and fifth options in the rotation. Street, meanwhile, was already resting when they got their run.

That stands out because Gallimore signed for more money than Street, and van den Berg arrived as the draft pick, while Street fits more the journeyman label. Even so, he’s been drawing solid reviews in training camp, and the preseason deployment backs that up. His spot looks secure.

Lynch also helped himself, even if his path was a little different. He didn’t enter until later, but he ended up playing 46 snaps, second-most on the team. What stood out was how the Bears used him.

He wasn’t treated like a normal interior lineman. Lynch logged 17 snaps as an interior rusher, 15 snaps lined up outside the tackle as a rush end, and 14 snaps over the tackle in a base-end role. In other words, he filled the kind of hybrid job the Bears are building for former second-round pick Shemar Turner.

That role had been expected to help settle the fourth edge rusher spot. With Marcus Davenport now signed, it could also point to Turner missing time into the regular season.

Either way, the Bears are thin there. If Lynch can give them value as both the fifth edge rusher and the fifth interior defensive lineman, that kind of versatility will keep him in the mix because he can step in when injuries hit.

For a couple of fringe roster players, the preseason opener suggested their odds may be better than they looked going in.

Kaden Davis Is Forcing His Way Into The Bears Offense

Kaden Davis has spent training camp and the preseason turning a quiet roster battle into a conversation the Bears cant ignore. The wideout has stood out enough to draw notice from offensive coordinator Press Taylor, and in a crowded receiver room with several established options, Davis has been making his case the old-fashioned way by stacking productive snaps and giving the coaching staff something to think about.

His preseason opener only helped his cause, as he flashed as both a receiver and a return option while showing the kind of playmaking ability that can matter when jobs are on the line. Chicago still has time to sort out how much room there is for him in the offense, but Davis has already done enough to put himself in the mix for more than just a camp footnote. [Read more 🡒]

Bears Suddenly Have A Backfield Decision They Cant Ignore

A practice scare has left Chicago with a little more uncertainty in the backfield than it wanted at this stage of camp. Kyle Monangai is considered week-to-week with a knee injury after getting tangled up with Grady Jarrett, and the timing matters because the Bears have been trying to sort out how much depth they really have behind their top options.

Nick Chubb is now the veteran name being floated as the obvious insurance play, which tells you how quickly the conversation can shift when a running back room gets thin. Chubbs recent performance history makes him an interesting fit if Chicago decides it wants another proven body in the room, but for now the Bears are still in the waiting phase, with no signing or roster move confirmed.
