In a move that brings some much-needed stability to their secondary, the Chicago Bears have re-signed Jaylon Jones to a one-year deal. Known for his reliability, Jones has been with the Bears since 2022, making six starts in 56 games. Last season, he contributed significantly with 16 tackles and a forced fumble over 15 games, stepping up during injury setbacks to Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon.
The Bears faced a challenging week, losing several key players from their secondary, including Kevin Byard, Jaquan Brisker, Jonathan Owens, Nahshon Wright, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Bringing Jones back into the fold is a strategic move to bolster their depth in this critical area.
Primarily serving as a backup nickel to Gordon, Jones isn’t expected to take on a massive role in the secondary. However, his presence on special teams could be pivotal. With Josh Blackwell leading the special teams unit and the departure of key player Owens to the Indianapolis Colts, Jones is poised to step up and fill that void.
Given their current cap space of just over $6 million, the Bears are likely to focus on re-signing existing players and creating room for draft picks, rather than pursuing additional signings in the immediate future.
