The Chicago Bears have been busy retooling their defense, especially after losing key players like Kevin Byard, Nahshon Wright, Jaquan Brisker, and CJ Gardner-Johnson in free agency. While the draft will be crucial for replenishing their secondary, the Bears have already made strategic moves in free agency to bolster their defense. Among these signings, safety Coby Bryant grabbed headlines, but it's cornerback Cam Lewis who might prove to be an underrated gem for the Bears in 2026.
Cam Lewis: A Versatile Asset for the Bears
Cam Lewis comes to Chicago after six solid seasons with the Buffalo Bills. His experience-76 games with 14 starts-has seen him rack up 166 total tackles, 11 pass deflections, three forced fumbles, and an interception.
While he primarily served as a depth player, his versatility is exactly what the Bears need. Lewis can seamlessly transition between safety, outside corner, and slot positions, making him a valuable chess piece for Dennis Allen's defensive scheme.
The Bears faced challenges last season with injuries to key players like Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson. This opened the door for Nahshon Wright, who capitalized on the opportunity with five interceptions. While replicating such success isn't guaranteed, integrating Lewis into this defensive system could unlock new potential.
Under the guidance of Allen and defensive backs/passing game coordinator Al Harris, the Bears have shown they can cultivate a ball-hawking defense. Last season, they led the NFL in turnover differential (+22) and interceptions (23). Although it's uncertain if they can maintain that level of success, adding a player with Lewis's skill set is a savvy move.
The Bears' coaching staff has a proven track record of developing defensive talent, and Lewis could very well thrive under their tutelage. While it's uncertain how heavily the Bears will rely on him, his ability to step up when needed makes him a strategic addition to their roster.
Ideally, Lewis will be a rotational player, but should circumstances demand more from him, Bears fans can be confident in his capability to rise to the occasion and deliver solid performances on the field.
