The Chicago Bears trimmed their roster picture a little further with a pair of moves that directly affect two of the camp’s most crowded battles.
Chicago announced the signings of edge rusher Marcus Davenport and defensive back Denatre Prince. To make room, the team waived running back Coleman Bennett and released tight end Nikola Kalinic with an injury designation.
Those transactions matter because both Bennett and Kalinic were part of the mix at the back end of the roster, where Chicago still has enough depth to keep the competition alive but not enough room for everyone.
Bennett’s exit is the clearest signal of the day. The rookie UDFA was in the middle of a four-man fight for what is expected to be a roster spot at running back, but he was already facing long odds.
Roschon Johnson, a draft pick who has struggled to stay healthy, remains the leading candidate for the third spot when he is available, and he also adds value on special teams. He started for the Bears, which points to him being in front in the race.
Salvon Ahmed has also made a push. He drew praise during camp and backed that up with two rushes for 17 yards and three catches for 55 yards. Among the group, that was the best yards per carry and the most receiving production.
Brittain Brown, who suited up for Chicago in three games last year, posted five carries for eight yards in the preseason. That wasn’t eye-catching, but his familiarity with the team gave him an edge over Bennett. That left Bennett fourth in the competition for one spot, and the Bears now have a clearer view as they sort out the final three.
Kalinic’s situation is a little different. He was with the Bears last season and appeared in only two games, and he could clear waivers and revert to injured reserve, so this may not be the end of his run with the team.
Even so, the move sharpens the picture at tight end, where the fourth spot is not guaranteed but still looks like a real possibility. It is also the kind of job that could turn into a practice squad opportunity.
Stephen Carlson, who spent last season on the practice squad, could be back again. Qadir Ismael is making the switch from receiver and could be kept around as a developmental piece.
Rookie UDFA Hayden Large is also in the mix, and the Bears may want to hold onto him as well. That gives the practice squad battle some real juice.
With two preseason games left, Chicago still has decisions to make at three running back spots and three tight end spots.
