Caleb Williams is back on the practice field, and that alone changes the conversation for the Bears heading into Week 5.
Chicago listed Williams as a limited participant on Friday, marking the first time in nearly three weeks that he has done any work in practice. The quarterback is officially questionable for the game against the Green Bay Packers, even though head coach Ben Johnson already named Tyson Bagent as the team’s starter earlier in the week. It sure looks like Johnson is keeping Green Bay guessing.
Here’s how the Bears’ final Week 5 injury report shaped up before the Packers matchup:
- Keyshaun Elliott, LB - quadricep - DNP - Out
- Kyle Monangai, RB - thumb/toe - DNP - Out
- Caleb Williams, QB - hamstring - Limited - Questionable
- Kyler Gordon, CB - calf - Full - Questionable
- Noah Sewell, LB - Achilles - Full - Questionable
- Shemar Turner, DL - knee - Full - Questionable
- Jonah Jackson, OL - ankle - Full - -
- Grady Jarrett, DL - NIR (Rest) - Full - -
- Cam Lewis, DB - hip - Full - -
- D’Andre Swift, RB - hip/knee - Full - -
- Joe Thuney, OL - pectoral - Full - -
- Darnell Wright, OL - ankle - Full - -
Two Bears are already ruled out: Elliott and Monangai. Johnson had already said Friday that Monangai would miss the game, with the toe injury giving him more trouble than the thumb issue. Elliott, meanwhile, could be another week or two from returning.
The idea of Williams actually playing in this one is hard to buy, but the Bears are clearly not making it simple for the Packers. Johnson has already shown a willingness to throw a wrinkle at an opponent - he put Case Keenum in at quarterback on the first play against the New York Jets - so nothing feels completely off the table.
Swift is also set to go despite sitting out the first practice of the week. He should handle the lead-back role and will be looking to clean things up after losing two fumbles over the last three weeks.
Gordon’s status is moving in the right direction after he practiced fully, though the Bears are expected to stay cautious with him. He likely won’t come off injured reserve until the last possible moment.
Johnson also said Friday that there is a chance either Sewell or Turner could be activated and play in Week 5, with the other more likely to join the roster the following week.
Lewis is back after missing Week 4 with the hip injury and should reclaim his spot in the nickel against Green Bay.
Up front, the Bears’ offensive line looks close to full strength. Thuney, Jackson, and Wright all practiced fully after sitting out Wednesday, and all three appear ready to go.

Bears Fans Are Mourning One Of The Franchises Defining Icons
Mike Ditka, one of the most defining figures in Bears history, has died at 86, leaving behind a legacy that stretches from the field to the sideline and far beyond. A Hall of Fame player and legendary coach, Ditka helped reshape the tight end position before later guiding the 1985 Bears to a Super Bowl title, becoming forever tied to one of the most celebrated teams in franchise history.
His impact in Chicago was matched by the honors he collected across a long NFL career, but the loss lands hardest because Ditka was more than a football icon to so many around the game. His family remembered him as a player, coach and family man, a fitting summary for someone whose name will always sit near the top of any conversation about Bears greatness. [Read more 🡒]
Bears Backfield Suddenly Has A Packers Problem Roschon Johnson Could Inherit
The Bears backfield is suddenly worth watching again as the rivalry with Green Bay approaches, and Kyle Monangais health is the main reason. Monangai is dealing with turf toe and a thumb injury, and the toe issue is the one clouding his availability for the upcoming game against the Packers. When the rookie couldnt finish last week, Roschon Johnson was the next man up and found himself in a much bigger role than Chicago had planned for.
Johnsons workload could stay elevated if Monangai cant go, which would give the Bears a different look in the backfield at a tricky time on the schedule. DAndre Swifts recent benching already changed the pecking order once, and Chicago may be forced to lean on Johnson again if Monangai is sidelined against Green Bay. [Read more 🡒]
Bears Need More From These 3 Against Green Bay
Chicagos 3-1 start has kept the early-season spotlight on a team that has managed to stay afloat even with Caleb Williams sidelined, but Sunday at Lambeau Field brings a different kind of test. Against Green Bay, the Bears will need cleaner production from a few players whose roles have been quieter than expected, including Zavion Thomas and Cole Kmet, while the games special-teams and divisional stakes add some extra weight to every snap.
Thomas, Kmet and Kyler Gordon all fit the profile of players who could tilt a tight rivalry game if they give the Bears more than they have so far. The Packers kick return unit has been a strength, which only raises the importance of Chicago making its depth count in coverage and in the middle of the field, even if some of those contributions are still more projection than certainty.
