Chicago Bears cornerback Terell Smith has put himself back on the radar at exactly the right time.
A 53-second video he posted on social media showed him working through drills with the kind of fluid movement that suggests he’s getting closer to being ready for the 2026 season. For a Bears cornerback room that already has a crowded fight on its hands, that matters.
The spotlight in camp is already on the CB2 competition between Tyrique Stevenson and rookie fourth-round pick Malik Muhammad. But Smith is making it harder for Chicago to treat this as a two-man race. His return from a torn patellar tendon injury, which wiped out his 2025 season, adds another layer to a position group that could get messy fast.
Smith was placed on injured reserve last preseason and replaced by Nahshon Wright, who went on to earn a Pro Bowl selection last year. Now Smith is trying to reclaim his place after missing an entire year.
Before the injury, the fifth-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft had built a solid resume over his first two seasons in Chicago. In 26 games, he posted 68 tackles, 10 pass deflections, four tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
That production is part of why Smith should be in the mix once camp heats up. He may not be the favorite in the CB2 battle, but he has enough experience to force his way into the conversation somewhere in the secondary, especially with the Bears dealing with Kyler Gordon’s unknown status from his soft-tissue injury.
The competition for roster spots at cornerback is going to be fierce, and Smith’s timing could not be better. He is in the final year of his rookie contract, and this season may decide whether he stays in Chicago beyond 2026. If he can carry that training camp momentum onto the field, he could end up with the biggest opportunity of his career.
