The NFL Combine is set to showcase a wealth of talent, and all eyes are on the Chicago Bears' decision-makers, GM Ryan Poles and head coach Ben Johnson, as they evaluate potential picks.
The Bears have several offseason needs, but one stands out: the defensive line. CBS Sports' Josh Edwards highlighted this priority, pointing out that the defensive line is the crucial area for the Bears as they head into the Combine.
While the Bears might give Ozzy Trapilo time to settle into his role at left tackle, there's potential for surprises in the first round. Johnson will have unique insights into Trapilo's readiness on the left side. Other positions like wide receiver or guard, with names like Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson in the mix, might also get attention.
However, these are more curiosities than pressing issues. The defensive line is the real concern.
Last season, the Bears allowed the fourth-most yards before contact (1.89) in 2025, according to TruMedia. Adding a dynamic pass rusher could elevate the defense significantly.
The Bears' defensive line woes are clear
With only 35 sacks last season, the Bears' pass rush struggled. Almost half of those sacks came from Montez Sweat (10) and Gervon Dexter (six).
Austin Booker showed potential with 4.5 sacks in 10 games, but injuries kept him sidelined for nearly half the season. The Bears need more consistency on the defensive line, particularly at edge rusher.
While Dexter has performed well at tackle, Grady Jarrett, last offseason's major signing, hasn't lived up to his hefty contract. Despite being a strong leader, Jarrett's on-field performance hasn't matched the three-year, $40 million-plus deal.
Defense remains the primary focus, but the Bears will keep an eye on other positions, especially offensive tackle, as Trapilo will miss the first half of the 2026 season.
The wide receiver position seems stable with Rome Odunze, Luther Burden, and DJ Moore. However, if Moore is traded in the offseason, this could shift priorities.
Regardless of other considerations, Johnson and Poles must keep their focus squarely on strengthening the defensive line.
