The Chicago Bears are down to one preseason game before the roster decisions start coming fast, and the numbers alone don’t tell the full story on a handful of players.
That matters, because a few Bears have put together solid camps without the kind of stat lines that jump off the page. If fans only skim the box score, they could easily overlook players who have actually been helping themselves. And in a few cases, the production has been quieter than the performance.
Roschon Johnson is a good example. His line - 20 carries for 76 yards, 3.8 yards per attempt, plus two catches for four yards - doesn’t scream breakout.
He’s also catching some heat for a missed open lane against the Cincinnati Bengals, where he could have cut it back. That miss deserves criticism, but it shouldn’t drown out the bigger picture.
Johnson has still looked like a reliable power back and has been doing his job well.
Jordan van den Berg is another player whose impact has outpaced the stat sheet. He’s listed with just four tackles, but that barely scratches the surface of what he’s done.
He’s been driving offensive linemen backward and disrupting plays in the backfield. Van den Berg has been strong enough to put himself in the mix for the starting lineup.
Scotty Miller’s preseason has been solid in a different way. He has five receptions for 55 yards, which works out to 11 yards per catch.
That’s not flashy, but it has been effective. Three of those catches have moved the chains for first downs.
With Chicago’s receiver room looking deep, Miller still may not survive final cuts, but he’s doing enough to get noticed elsewhere around the league.
Then there’s Tory Taylor, who doesn’t usually get much preseason buzz unless something goes wrong. This time, the numbers say he’s been steady: 49.9 yards per punt with two kicks pinned inside the 20.
It’s a thankless position, but Taylor has handled it cleanly. He had a solid 2025 campaign and appears to be on pace to be even better in 2026.
Moss has also made a push lately. He’s shown real improvement over the last two games, even if the odds of making the team are slim.
His showing against the Bengals was a clear step up from his Week 1 game against the Cleveland Browns. With one more preseason game left, he should get plenty of chances to build his case for the practice squad or at least attract attention from another NFL team.
