Hornets Plan Could Propel Kon Knueppel Past Cooper Flagg

NBA analyst Greg Swartz outlines strategies for the Hornets to enhance Kon Knueppels Rookie of the Year prospects, highlighting his impressive shooting and monthly accolades.

The Charlotte Hornets have a promising path to help Kon Knueppel clinch the 2025-26 Rookie of the Year Award, and it all starts with ramping up his role on the court. As the season heads into the final stretch, the Hornets need to focus on elevating Knueppel’s profile in the race against Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg.

Both Knueppel and Flagg are standout candidates for the award, but Flagg has been the focal point of his team’s offense, while Knueppel is currently third in field-goal attempts for the Hornets, trailing behind LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller. With the recent addition of Coby White, the Hornets have an opportunity to shift more offensive responsibilities onto Knueppel, potentially tipping the scales in his favor.

Knueppel's numbers speak volumes. He’s averaging 19.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, shooting an impressive 48.8% from the field, 43.4% from three-point range, and 87.0% from the free-throw line. His sharpshooting has him leading the league in three-pointers, with a total of 243.

His stellar performance has not gone unnoticed. Knueppel was named the Kia NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for February, marking his fourth consecutive win. This achievement makes him the first Hornets player to win the award four times and the first NBA player to do so since Paolo Banchero in the 2022-23 season.

While his offensive prowess is evident, Hornets head coach Charles Lee has also praised Knueppel’s defensive acumen. “Defensively, you really see his basketball intelligence,” Lee noted. Knueppel’s understanding of player tendencies and his strategic approach to defensive positioning highlight his all-around game.

If the Hornets can strategically increase Knueppel’s offensive load, they might just pave the way for him to secure that coveted Rookie of the Year trophy.
