A new trade pitch has Kevin Durant leaving the Houston Rockets for the Charlotte Hornets, and the framework would send Naz Reid, Grayson Allen and two draft picks back to Houston.
The idea comes from Adam Martin of Lindy’s Sports, who put together the deal as a way to land Durant in Charlotte. If that kind of move ever became real, the Hornets would be betting on a star who still brings top-end scoring at age 37.
Durant is coming off a season in which he averaged 26.0 points per game while shooting 52.0% from the field, 41.3% from 3-point range and 87.4% from the free-throw line. He remains one of the league’s cleanest bucket-getters, which is why Martin’s concept casts him as the piece that could push Charlotte into contender territory.
The financial side is no small detail, either. Durant is set to make $43,902,439 next season and has a player option worth $46,097,561 for 2027-28.
He also does not have a no-trade clause. The 16-time All-Star is a two-time Finals MVP, and his résumé still stretches across Oklahoma City, Golden State, Brooklyn, Phoenix and Houston.
Career-wise, Durant has averaged 27.1 points per game in the regular season and 29.3 in the playoffs.
The Hornets’ recent roster decisions are also part of the backdrop here. Some Charlotte fans were unhappy with the Ball trade, but Hornets president of basketball operations and general manager Jeff Peterson said he was comfortable with it because of Miller and Knueppel.
“I’m very comfortable,” Peterson said. “Charles and I had a conversation with both of them knowing that these trades can be challenging.
Sometimes I do think we forget that we’re human beings dealing with this stuff - lives and its emotions. Those guys are friends and they are in the locker room every day.
At the same time, Charles and I kind of explained, We believe in you guys, too. You guys are here.
We want to continue to see you guys grow. This is going to challenge you guys.
You guys got to continue to get better.' We wouldn’t have made that trade if we didn’t feel comfortable with what they can continue to be developing into.”
