Rob Dillingham’s latest headline has nothing to do with points, assists or playing time - and everything to do with how fast things can unravel in the public eye.
The former No. 8 overall pick was waived by the Charlotte Hornets on September 28, less than 24 hours after the team acquired him from the Chicago Bulls in a trade involving Buddy Hield. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the move, which appeared to be driven more by Charlotte’s roster and financial flexibility than by any real opportunity for Dillingham to compete for a spot.
That decision created a $9.6 million trade exception for the Hornets.
But the roster move wasn’t the only reason Dillingham suddenly became a trending topic. A viral social media post tied him to influencer Tatiana Chanel after screenshots from an exposé video by social media personality Sumaya Mari allegedly showed an Instagram account associated with Dillingham sending Chanel the message, “I need you.”
In another exchange included in the video, the account was identified as belonging to Dillingham before Chanel seemingly replied, “Ewwwwww blocked.”
The screenshots spread quickly, with social media accounts presenting the apparent rejection as yet another blow for Dillingham right after his Hornets exit. But the images themselves appear to tell a different story. The dates shown in the screenshots are June 10, which would place the alleged exchange months before the September waiver, not after it.
The screenshots have not been independently authenticated, and Dillingham has not commented publicly on them. That leaves the nature of any previous relationship between Dillingham and Chanel unclear.
For now, the bigger issue is Dillingham’s basketball future. The 21-year-old entered the league as the No. 8 pick in the 2024 draft, selected by the San Antonio Spurs before being traded immediately to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He never found a steady role there, and Minnesota later moved him to Chicago at the 2026 trade deadline.
He did flash some value with the Bulls, putting up 9.6 points and 2.8 assists over 30 games. Charlotte looked like another chance, but that opportunity vanished before he even got to practice.
After clearing waivers, Dillingham is an unrestricted free agent, though he can’t immediately sign with Chicago. His age, speed, scoring touch and lottery pedigree could still make him appealing to another team.
So while the social media chatter has turned this into a brutal stretch for him, the timeline is not as dramatic as it first looked. The Hornets waived him quickly - but the alleged Chanel exchange appears to have happened long before that.

Hornets New Core Already Facing A Brutal Outside Verdict
The Hornets are trying to reset around a new-look starting group that leans on Coby White, Kon Knueppel, Brandon Miller, Naz Reid and Moussa Diabat, with Miller and Knueppel viewed as the faces of the next phase. It is a young, intriguing mix on paper, and one that carries a real burden after Charlotte missed the playoffs last season and fell in the play-in tournament.
Still, the early outside read has been harsh, with one national ranking slotting Charlottes projected starting lineup near the bottom of the league. For a franchise banking on Millers rise and the possibility of a massive rookie-scale extension down the road, the evaluation is a reminder that potential and credibility are still two very different things, and the Hornets have a lot to prove before this new core earns more than cautious optimism. Coby White Now Carries A Hornets Question That Could Define Their Season
With LaMelo Ball gone, the Hornets are looking at Coby White in a very different way this season. Charles Lee expects the guard to take on a larger role after White re-signed with Charlotte following last seasons trade, and the team is counting on him to keep scoring while also handling more of the playmaking load.
For Charlotte, the question is bigger than whether White can fit in. The Hornets need his development to help stabilize the backcourt and give them a real chance to chase a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, which is why his next step as a creator matters so much to the season ahead. Hornets Enter A New Era With One Huge Question To Answer
The Hornets are stepping into the 2026-27 season with a very different look after the trade of LaMelo Ball to Minnesota, and the front office has clearly chosen a youth-driven reset. Charlotte still has enough offensive talent to believe it can score with most teams, but the bigger question around the franchise is how quickly the group can mature into something more stable and competitive in the East.
Head coach Charles Lee has spent the offseason steering the conversation toward a new way of winning, one built on taking the game seriously on the defensive end and supporting that vision with experienced help. The additions of Naz Reid, Royce O'Neale and Grayson Allen fit that plan, but the Hornets still have to prove the pieces can come together fast enough to keep the season from becoming another long lesson in development.
