Former Hornets center Mark Williams is facing another setback before the NBA season even gets rolling.
Williams, now with the Phoenix Suns, has undergone surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN. The injury happened during an offseason workout this summer, and it will keep him out for a significant stretch.
For a player whose career has already been defined by missed time, this is another harsh blow. Williams entered the league with real momentum after the Charlotte Hornets took him with the No. 15 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Duke University. At Duke, he had put together a strong sophomore season, averaging 11.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game.
That promise has been interrupted again and again by injuries. Williams appeared in just 43 games as a rookie and only 19 games the following season. The Hornets kept believing he could still put it together, but that breakthrough never fully arrived.
His time in Charlotte eventually ended in dramatic fashion at the 2024-25 trade deadline, when he was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers in a major trade. That move never stuck, though, because the Lakers rescinded the deal because of injury concerns, sending Williams back to the Hornets.
He finished that season in Charlotte before being traded to Phoenix in the following offseason. Last year with the Suns, Williams played in 60 games and averaged 11.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.
Phoenix then brought him back on a fully guaranteed three-year, $38 million contract this offseason, banking on him to be part of a revamped frontcourt. Now, that plan has been thrown off before the season even begins.
