Cooper Flagg Gets Honest On Heated ROY Race

Duke alumni and NBA rookies Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel, former college roommates and now rivals, are at the center of a tight Rookie of the Year race, blending competition with camaraderie.

In the race for the 2025-26 NBA Rookie of the Year, it's shaping up to be a thrilling showdown between two former Duke standouts: Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg and Charlotte Hornets swingman Kon Knueppel. Both players have made an immediate impact in their debut seasons, and their performances have fans buzzing.

After a decisive Mavericks win over the Trail Blazers, Flagg shared his thoughts on the Rookie of the Year competition. Despite the intense rivalry, Flagg and Knueppel maintain a strong bond, forged during their time as college roommates.

"We don't talk about Rookie of the Year at all," Flagg noted, emphasizing their friendship over competition. "We've stayed connected and shared thoughts on our games, helping each other out as much as possible."

Knueppel has been lighting it up for the Hornets, averaging 19.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. His shooting has been nothing short of spectacular, hitting 48.9% from the field, a sizzling 43.8% from three-point range, and 86.3% from the free-throw line. It's no wonder he leads the NBA in three-pointers.

On the other side, Flagg has been a powerhouse for the Mavericks, posting 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. His shooting stats, 47.4% overall and 81.4% from the line, highlight his offensive prowess. He’s leading all rookies in both points and assists per game, showcasing his all-around game.

Knueppel's accolades include being named the Kia NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for February, marking his fourth consecutive win of the award. This achievement makes him the first in Hornets history to claim Rookie of the Month four times, a feat not seen since Paolo Banchero's impressive run with the Magic in 2022-23.

As the season progresses, the Flagg-Knueppel rivalry is one to watch, with both players pushing each other to new heights. Their friendship may be strong, but on the court, it's all about proving who the top rookie is this season.
