Charles Lee’s first pregame press conference of the 2026-27 season didn’t take long to reveal what he values most. Before the Hornets even tipped off against the Nets, the conversation turned to pace, rebounding, and the way Charlotte defines speed on its own terms.
Lee’s explanation of that internal approach was the clearest takeaway from the morning. He said the Hornets want to stay “relentless on the glass,” but their idea of pace goes beyond simply sprinting up and down the floor.
For him, it starts with quick inbounds, the “next-play mentality,” and getting the ball “high and wide up the court” as fast as possible. He also stressed pass-aheads, pass-acrosses, and creating early advantages through movement rather than dribbling, which he called “the slowest way up the court.”
Lee added that Charlotte’s pace is tied heavily to “time and action,” especially how quickly the team gets into its after-actions and decisions in closeout situations. He noted that the Hornets’ pace number on the NBA website might not fully reflect how they judge it internally.
The injury report took some of the air out of the day. Just before Lee spoke, it was announced that Christian Anderson Jr. and Brandon Miller would not play.
Lee later gave a short update on the group, saying, “Unfortunately, Coby suffered an injury during training camp,” and that he is “obviously in good spirits and understands that every day is just going to be important for him as he continues to work through his rehab process.” He said Christian and Brandon “sustained injuries during practice, and they're day-to-day,” and added, “And so they'll keep going through their rehab routines, and we'll update you guys.”
With Coby White, Anderson Jr., and Kylan Boswell all out, Sion James is set for heavy minutes at point guard behind Dennis Schröder. Lee did not offer any details about White’s possible return timeline when asked.
There is at least one notable debut coming. Fourteenth overall pick Hannes Steinbach is expected to see plenty of run, and Lee talked about how practice battles with Moussa Diabaté have already tested him.
Lee said the rookies are pushing each other, pointing to Diabaté’s relentless work on the glass and the physical edge he brings even on side-out-of-bounds plays. He said Steinbach has had to learn how to shield defenders to secure catches, but also praised the rookie’s own tools, calling him “a big physical guy” with a strong feel for the game.
Lee added that Steinbach is “a really smart, high basketball IQ player” who has done well on both ends, and said he has good mentors around him both at his position and beyond it.
For now, the Hornets are treating the injury situations as precautionary as preseason gets underway. Tip-off against the Nets is set for 7:00 PM EST at the Spectrum Center.

Hornets Already Have A Point Guard Problem After Moving LaMelo
Moving on from LaMelo Ball was always going to reshape the Hornets backcourt, and the early returns have only made the point guard picture look more unsettled. Charlotte tried to patch things up by re-signing Coby White, drafting Christian Anderson Jr. and bringing in Dennis Schrder, a group that was supposed to keep the position steady while the franchise moved into its next phase.
Instead, the preseason has already brought more questions than answers. Anderson struggled in Summer League and is dealing with an injury, while White is sidelined with a calf issue and will miss preseason games, leaving Charlotte thin at the spot before the games even count. Ball, meanwhile, opened his Minnesota preseason looking comfortable in his new uniform, which only sharpens the contrast for Hornets fans still waiting to see whether the team's next answer at point guard is actually in place. Brandon Miller Injury Creates An Early Hornets Concern
Brandon Millers preseason has already hit a small snag for the Hornets, with the second-year wing dealing with a shin contusion he picked up in practice. Charlotte has been taking the cautious route, keeping him day-to-day as the team works through the opening weeks of exhibition play and prepares for its next preseason test against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Millers absence from the recent game against the Brooklyn Nets added a little more early-season concern, especially for a player whose development remains central to Charlottes plans. There is already outside buzz about a possible long-term extension down the road, but for now the Hornets are focused on getting Miller back on the floor and making sure a preseason bump does not linger. Naz Reid Already Feels Like A Huge Part Of Charlottes Reset
Before Charlottes first preseason game against Brooklyn, Charles Lee was already talking about Naz Reid like a player who can help steady the Hornets new direction. The big man arrived from Minnesota as part of the LaMelo Ball trade, and his first taste of a Charlotte uniform offered a quick glimpse of why the team wanted him in the mix as it starts over with a reshaped roster.
Reid wasted little time showing he can bring scoring and activity in short bursts, and that matters for a Hornets group still sorting out how its pieces fit together around young talent such as Miller and Knueppel. With the season just getting underway, Charlotte is trying to establish roles and identity, and Reids early return has at least given the coaching staff one more reason to believe the reset can take hold sooner rather than later.
