UCF’s path to a bowl game runs straight through three ranked opponents, and the next three weeks could define the Knights’ season.
It starts Saturday against No. 20 Houston, then shifts into a road swing against No.
19 Oklahoma State before the Knights come back to Orlando to host No. 10 BYU.
For a team trying to steady itself in Big 12 play, that’s a brutal stretch with very little margin for error.
The urgency is easy to understand. UCF has gone 7-20 in conference play since joining the Big 12, with the home opener win over TCU last Saturday left out of that number.
The Knights have been far better outside league play under Gus Malzahn and Scott Frost, going 11-1 in non-conference games. That early success matters, because a bowl bid could still be there if UCF can get three or four wins across its nine Big 12 games.
The program has already shown it can navigate a tough run when things click. In 2023, UCF beat Cincinnati, upset then-No.
15 Oklahoma State and Houston, and punched its ticket to the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl against Georgia Tech. That remains the Knights’ last bowl appearance.
Since then, the slide has been rough: a 4-14 record over the next two seasons, along with nine losses by double digits.
This year’s 3-1 start has put UCF in better shape than it has been in a while, but the next month can change everything fast. The biggest concern is the road. Houston and Oklahoma State look especially dangerous with UCF carrying a 10-game road losing streak since 2024.
Houston already has a painful chapter in UCF’s recent memory. The Knights lost their first Space Game to the Cougars in heartbreaking fashion, when former quarterback Davi Belfort led the team into Cougars territory and threw the game-sealing interception, ending an undefeated streak.
Oklahoma State brings a different kind of challenge. The Cowboys have flipped their season completely, going from the Big 12’s worst team last year to a top-25 group.
Their turnaround has been powered in part by North Texas quarterback transfer Drew Mestemaker, who has thrown for 1,271 yards and 11 touchdowns and helped them pull off an upset of then-No. 5 Oregon.
Then there’s BYU, which has settled in as a Big 12 force under Kalani Sitake alongside Texas Tech and Utah. The Cougars reached the conference championship game before losing to Texas Tech.
For UCF, the stakes are plain. The Knights have given themselves a chance, but this is the stretch that will show whether that chance turns into a bowl trip or slips away.
