UCF’s backfield made a loud statement in Week 1, and Landen Chambers was right in the middle of it.
The Knights rolled to a 73-6 win over Bethune-Cookman and ripped off 360 rushing yards with seven touchdowns on the ground. Chambers, the transfer back, finished with two scores, 56 yards on six carries and one catch for 15 yards.
For Chambers, the opener was more than just a productive afternoon. It was his first touchdown in a UCF uniform, and it came in a sequence that showed exactly what he brings to the table.
After UCF’s defense forced a fumble in the second quarter, Chambers picked up 13 yards on the drive before punching in a 2-yard score. A quarter later, he was back in the end zone again, this time on a 27-yard run.
On Monday, Chambers spoke with the media and sounded confident about what this running back group can become.
"We all have one goal in mind, so if we can all stay healthy and keep each other accountable, it can be real great, real special," Chambers said.
That belief isn’t limited to Chambers. Duke Watson also came away from the opener convinced this room can be something different.
"I watch the guys practice every day," Watson said following the win. "They work hard, head down.
They're great backs, you know. I feel like we got one of the best running back rooms in the nation."
Watson brought a different look to the offense, giving UCF a speed element that pairs cleanly with Chambers’ power. Watson hits the hole fast and makes defenders miss. Chambers brings the bruising style, and when UCF gets near the goal line, that physical edge matters.
The depth goes beyond those two, too. Agyeman Addae and Taevion Swint also found the end zone in the opener, giving UCF a backfield with multiple ways to attack.
Chambers was asked about his role as the goalline and primary redzone tailback, and he said he is going to "take pride" in it, smiling and moving on to the next question.
The next challenge comes Saturday against Pittsburgh, and that’s where this group gets a real test. The Panthers have built a reputation for stopping the run, and the numbers back it up. According to Roundtable’s Demetrius Montero, Pittsburgh has finished in the top half of the ACC in run defense in recent seasons, ranking second last year at 95.1 yards allowed per game, third in 2024 at 112.8 and eighth in 2023 at 150.2.
