UCF enters the 2026-2027 season with one of its biggest building blocks already in place, and John Bol’s name is getting attention for all the right reasons.
The junior center was ranked No. 100 among college basketball’s top big men by JPR Scouting on Thursday, a slot that feels a little light for a player who gave the Knights real value down the stretch last season. Still, the ranking also reflects the parts of Bol’s game that were a work in progress at times - the foul trouble, the turnovers, and the stretches where his youth showed through.
Even with those bumps, Bol was hard to miss. After arriving from Ole Miss, the 7-foot-2 big man started every game he played for UCF and put up 5.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest while shooting 71.7% from the field. He also gave the Knights a real deterrent at the rim, finishing with 1.1 blocks per game.
That combination of length, athleticism and improving polish became especially important when the games got bigger.
In UCF’s “win and your in” matchup against Cincinnati in the Big 12 Tournament, Bol delivered one of his best outings of the season. He scored 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds and helped push the Knights to a 66-65 win that sent them to March Madness.
The finish was frantic. UCF shot just 34% overall and hit only 3 of 24 attempts from 3-point range, but the Knights used a 1-3-1 pressure look in the final two minutes to fuel an 8-0 run and force overtime.
Bol then handled the moment at the line, making four straight free throws in overtime.
He also showed up in another major spot earlier in the season when UCF beat then-ranked No. 11 Texas Tech.
Bol posted a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double in that game, going 6-for-8 from the field and 2-for-3 at the free-throw line. And across the four-game stretch before and after that matchup, he was perfect from the field, going 10-for-10 combined.
Now entering his second season in the program, Bol is sounding like a player who expects more than just another tournament appearance. In late July, he made it clear the standard has changed.
"I can't let this coaching staff down," Bol said in late-July. "They believe in me. Making it to the NCAA Tournament is not just the goal; we have to win and see how deep we can go in it."
