Duke Watson’s role at UCF has already been established this season: when the junior is hitting the gas, the Knights’ offense can look unstoppable. When he’s bottled up, things get messy in a hurry.
That’s why Watson landing at No. 6 in Top Tier Utah’s Big 12 running back rankings entering Week 7 matters, even with his production cooling off in conference play. The ranking stayed the same from last week, and it still slots him behind Oklahoma State’s Caleb Hawkins and Texas Tech’s Ja’Koby Williams.
Watson opened the year with real juice. In non-conference play, he piled up 297 yards and three touchdowns, then followed that with 186 yards across three Big 12 games. The difference has been clear: the breakaway bursts that defined his early-season stretch have been harder to find once league games started.
The big-play ability is still the calling card. Watson ripped off two 60-plus-yard runs, one against Bethune-Cookman in Week 1 and another against Georgia State in Week 3, and both went for touchdowns.
That kind of speed changes how UCF can attack. When he gets loose more than once, the offense hums.
When he doesn’t, the whole thing can stall out.
That hasn’t just been a theory. UCF has lost three of the four games in which Watson failed to top 100 yards, a direct reflection of how much the Knights lean on their lead back to keep the machine moving.
Opponents have already shown their approach. Before UCF’s Big 12 opener, TCU coach Sonny Dykes laid out the task in plain terms, saying the Horned Frogs needed to contain Watson and tackle him in space. Watson finished that game with 57 yards, though TCU still couldn’t erase its own late turnovers.
Since then, conference defenses have kept him from turning the corner the way he did early. Watson is averaging 62 yards per game, and his longest rush in Big 12 play is just 37 yards, which came against No.
20 Houston. On that play, he worked through Houston’s front seven to reach the 2-yard line, and quarterback Keyone Jenkins finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.
The next stretch could be just as tricky. UCF is set to face No.
8 BYU and Baylor, and both defenses have been tough against the run. BYU is allowing 80.4 yards per game, while Baylor is giving up 97.4.
That means the Knights may need Jenkins to shoulder more of the load over the next two weeks. He posted his best showing of the season against Oklahoma State, throwing for 265 yards and four touchdowns in a performance that earned him a top-10 quarterback ranking in Week 6.
A real chance for Watson to rediscover his early-season form may not arrive until Nov. 7, when UCF travels to Kansas. The Jayhawks allow 137.4 rushing yards per game, good for 11th in the league.
For a player built on explosive plays, that matchup could be the opening Watson has been waiting for. His burst remains central to the fast pace UCF wants to play, and when he finds daylight, the entire offense tends to follow.

Tacko Fall Just Gave UCF Fans Real Reason To Watch Philly
Tacko Fall is headed to Philadelphia on a deal that gives him a real shot to stick, and for UCF fans, it is a familiar name suddenly worth tracking again. Fall first agreed to a training camp contract with the 76ers, and the move gives the big man a chance to add frontcourt depth for a team dealing with injuries and uncertainty around Joel Embiid.
Fall has been out of the NBA since his run with Cleveland in 2021, but his path back has taken him through the Australian NBL and the Chinese Basketball Association. Now he is in position to contribute in Philadelphia, and for Knights fans, it is one more reason to keep an eye on a roster that could need size in a hurry. [Read more 🡒]
UCF Fans Have A Bye Week With Big 12 Stakes To Watch
With UCF on a bye week, Saturday still carries plenty of weight for Knights fans looking ahead on the schedule. Several Big 12 games will help shape the backdrop for the rest of October, including BYUs meeting with Notre Dame, along with Baylor vs. TCU and Kansas vs. Kansas State. Those matchups are worth following not just for the standings, but because they offer a clearer picture of the opponents UCF will see soon enough.
BYU is the biggest one on the radar, since the Cougars are set to visit UCF on Oct. 24. Their matchup with Notre Dame could tell the Knights whether they are preparing for an unbeaten opponent or one coming off its first loss, and there is also added uncertainty around BYUs backfield because of an injury to star running back LJ Martin. For a team on the sideline this week, it is still a useful Saturday for scoreboard watching. [Read more 🡒]
UCF Is Fighting To Keep A Local Five-Star Home
RJ Evans is the kind of local prospect UCF would love to make a centerpiece, not just because he plays at The Academy of Central Florida, but because he already looks like the sort of high-end talent programs build around. The five-star forward in the Class of 2029 has made it clear he is focused first on fit and opportunity as he thinks long term about an NBA future, which puts the Knights in the conversation right alongside programs with far more national recruiting cachet.
Johnny Dawkins has shown he can sell development to elite players, and UCF has a real pitch when it comes to keeping a top prospect close to home. Still, the competition is steep, with blueblood-level attention and other major programs circling, and Evans is weighing a broader group of options as this recruitment begins to take shape.
