Fulks and Burks Light Up the Scoreboard: UCF Shocks No. 19 BYU with Dynamic Play
In a game that will be remembered for its electrifying performances, the UCF Knights (20-7, 9-6 Big 12) pulled off a stunning upset over No. 19 Brigham Young (20-8, 8-7 Big 12), leaving the Marriott Center buzzing. With their eyes set on an NCAA Tournament bid, the Knights showcased a blend of explosive offense and seamless teamwork to secure a 97-84 victory.
This win marks UCF's third major upset of the season and solidifies back-to-back 20-win campaigns. The Knights return home undefeated from their Utah road trip, ready to face Baylor (14-14, 4-11 Big 12) on Saturday. Here’s a breakdown of Tuesday night's memorable triumph.
Fulks and Burks were the stars of the night, each contributing 24 points. Fulks was on fire, shooting 10-for-21 and dishing out 11 assists, breaking the Knights' single-season assist record. "I play with really good teammates," Fulks said, emphasizing the professional-level talent surrounding him.
Burks was a force on the boards, grabbing 12 rebounds and proving his mettle in the paint. "That's my job," Burks commented, highlighting his focus on doing more than just scoring and emphasizing the importance of extra possessions.
UCF's Ball Movement Dismantles BYU
The Knights' unselfish play was on full display with 25 assists compared to BYU's 11. Fulks' playmaking kept his teammates involved, allowing them to exploit the Cougars' defense. Coach Johnny Dawkins praised the team's chemistry, noting how Fulks and Themus worked together to create scoring opportunities.
Forward Jamichael Stillwell also impressed as a facilitator, adding six assists and showcasing his all-around game.
Holding Off BYU's Second-Half Surge
Despite a commanding 52-28 lead at halftime, the Knights faced a fierce comeback from BYU, who poured in 56 points in the second half. But UCF's early dominance provided enough cushion to withstand the rally, led by BYU star AJ Dybantsa.
"We knew they weren't going anywhere," Dawkins said, acknowledging the resilience of the Cougars and stressing the importance of executing until the final whistle.
