UCF Showed Enough At LSU To Spark One Big Debate

In a closely contested exhibition, the UCF Knights fell short against LSU, revealing both strengths and areas for improvement as the season approaches.

Johnny Dawkins’ UCF Knights got a real test on Wednesday night, and it ended with LSU pulling out an 85-81 win in exhibition play.

Dior Johnson paced UCF with 18 points in his return to the program after a stint at Tarleton State. He was efficient enough to keep the Knights alive late, going 9-for-17 from the floor, and 16 of his points came after halftime. John Bol added five points, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and blocked a shot, while also helping fuel the second-chance battle.

This one never settled down. The game featured 13 lead changes, and each team spent more than 17 minutes in front.

UCF owned a two-point edge at the break, but the rhythm shifted in the second half. The Knights knocked down nine shots from deep before halftime, then cooled off badly, making only two of 13 from three-point range after the break.

Even so, UCF hung around because Johnson kept scoring and Bol, along with Lewis Walker, created extra possessions on the offensive glass. The Knights finished with 18 second-chance points, while LSU had just seven. Boston College transfer Jason Asemota also gave UCF work in the paint, finishing with six rebounds, all of them on the defensive end.

The closing stretch came down to execution. The score was tied 81-81 after a missed UCF free throw with 34 seconds left. Donovan Dent answered with a go-ahead layup for LSU with eight seconds remaining, then Mo Dioubate picked off the Knights’ inbound pass and finished another layup with four seconds left to put it away for Will Wade’s shorthanded team.

Fouls were a major factor, too. UCF went 6-for-9 at the line and was called for 25 fouls, while LSU hit 15 of 27 free throws.

There were still some positives for the Knights beyond the final score. UCF got useful minutes spread around the roster, and its bench chipped in 37 points. LSU, meanwhile, went with just six players as several of its transfer additions remained in eligibility legal limbo.

UCF now heads to Kentucky for its final preseason exhibition on October 28, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. ET on SEC Network+. The Knights will then open the regular season on Monday, November 2 against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles.

UCF Showed Promise But One Late Issue Still Looks Costly

UCF got a useful early test Monday night in Baton Rouge, pushing LSU deep into the closing moments before falling 85-81 in an exhibition game at Maravich Assembly Center. Dior Johnson led the Knights with 18 points, and the effort suggested there is real scoring punch in the group as it settles in ahead of the season.

Still, the final minute showed how thin the margin can be against a team with LSUs shot-making. The Tigers leaned on Abdi Bashirs 26 points and got just enough down the stretch to escape, leaving UCF with encouraging signs to build on and one late-game problem that could linger if it shows up again when the games count. Auburn Already Has An Early Rotation Problem Fans Will Notice

Exhibition season has a way of surfacing issues before they become problems, and Auburn got a glimpse of that against Florida State in one of the days four college basketball tuneups. The slate also included UT-Martin against Northern Kentucky, St. Johns against Drexel and LSU against UCF, with several newcomers across the sport making immediate impressions as teams tested lineups and roles ahead of the real thing.

For Auburn, the takeaway was less about the final numbers and more about how early rotations can already start to narrow. Around the country, other schools were already seeing new faces tilt the action in useful ways, which is why the Tigers own exhibition look matters now as much as it does later. The gap between a promising preseason run and a workable regular-season rotation can close quickly, and Auburns first preview offered an early hint that not every spot is settled yet. [Read more 🡒]

Kentuckys New-Look Roster Gets An Early Test Arizona Fans Should Watch

Kentuckys revamped roster is about to get a useful early reading before the games start to count. The Wildcats will work through three exhibition games at Rupp Arena, giving the staff a chance to see how the pieces fit against Little Rock and Texas Tech before the tune-up most relevant to UCF, a team that can use the matchup to gauge where it stands against high-major talent.

For Central Florida, the trip serves as a clean measuring stick in the final week of October, with a chance to face a Kentucky group still sorting out roles and rhythm. Fans looking to keep tabs on the Knights last exhibition before the regular season will be able to follow along on SEC Network, with the Wildcats then turning quickly to their opener Nov. 3 against Manhattan at Rupp Arena.
