ORLANDO - UCF opened the 20th season of the Bounce House in emphatic fashion Thursday night, rolling past Bethune-Cookman 73-6 to tie the program record for points in a game and set a new mark for largest margin of victory.
The Knights wasted no time setting the tone. Junior running back Duke Watson needed just one carry as a Knight to make his presence felt, bursting 64 yards for the game’s first touchdown on UCF’s second play from scrimmage. Less than half a minute later, Jayden Williams turned his third career interception into six more, racing 47 yards for a pick-six and a 14-0 lead with a little more than four minutes gone.
From there, the avalanche kept coming.
Alonza Barnett III added a five-yard touchdown run, his first as a Knight, before connecting with Jonathan Bibbs on a touchdown pass early in the second quarter. That throw gave Barnett his 50th career passing touchdown, while Bibbs collected the fifth touchdown catch of his career.
Will Stone followed with a 34-yard field goal for his first career make, then later matched a single-game UCF record with 10 extra points. Before halftime, Landen Chambers punched in a two-yard score to send the Knights to the locker room up 38-0.
UCF’s ground game stayed in overdrive after the break. Redshirt freshman and Osceola High product Taevion Swint scored his first rushing touchdown on a 27-yard run two minutes into the third quarter.
Chambers answered again four minutes later with another 27-yard burst, giving him his second rushing touchdown of the night. Caleb Rollerson then hauled in a nine-yard touchdown from Keyone Jenkins, and Agyeman Addae finished the third quarter with the first rushing touchdown of his career to make it 66-0.
The Knights weren’t done yet. Rocco Marriot capped the scoring with a one-yard run in the fourth quarter after nearly reaching the end zone on a 17-yard scamper.
By the end of the night, six different Knights had accounted for seven rushing touchdowns, and the team piled up 360 rushing yards. The passing game spread the wealth too, with nine different UCF players catching at least one pass.
Scott Frost picked up the 25th victory of his UCF career in a game that also tied the school record for points scored, matching the 73 UCF put up against Austin Peay in 2017. The 67-point margin topped the previous program best of 64 points against Grand Valley State in 1987.
Bethune-Cookman’s only points came as the clock expired on an eight-yard touchdown pass.
The win pushed UCF to 11 straight season-opening victories and improved the Knights to 30-1 against FCS opponents since moving to FBS in 1996. It also extended their Thursday night winning streak to 12, leaving them three shy of Miami’s FBS record of 15 straight Thursday wins from 1998-2008. UCF now owns the third-longest active Thursday streak, behind Utah and Oklahoma State at 13 each.
The offensive outburst also placed UCF tied for 12th among Big 12 teams for most points scored in conference history, with Oklahoma State holding the standard at 84.
The Knights are back on the road next, heading to Acrisure Stadium to face Pittsburgh on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
