Rocco Marriott is already getting a real look in UCF practice, and the freshman quarterback’s role says plenty about how the Knights view his future.
While Marriott is redshirting this season, he’s not just standing on the sideline watching. UCF offensive coordinator Steve Cooper said the freshman is working against the first-team defense while rotating with the first- or second-team offense, a setup designed to speed up his development.
"He's getting closer day by day," Cooper said during Tuesday's media availability. "Excited about his future.
But really it's pretty simple. Like, you've got to give the guy reps, and we're doing that."
That’s the balance UCF is trying to strike: let the freshman learn from the veterans in front of him while still pushing him into competitive reps. Marriott sits behind seniors Alonza Barnett III and Keyone Jenkins on the depth chart, and both bring plenty of experience from their previous stops.
Barnett transferred in from James Madison, where he started every game over the last two seasons and helped lead the Dukes to their first College Football Playoff appearance last year. Jenkins came over from FIU after starting 33 games across three seasons for the Panthers.
Those two give UCF a steady quarterback room, but Marriott is starting to carve out his own space within it. On game days, he’s learning from the sideline. In practice, he’s the one getting the most developmental attention.
He’s already flashed what makes him interesting. Marriott scored his first career touchdown in Week 1 against Bethune-Cookman.
On that play, he took his first read-option run 17 yards, cut outside, and came up one yard short of the end zone. Scott Frost then called a quarterback dive, and Marriott finished it off with a one-yard score to extend UCF’s lead to 73.
There was even a chance he might see the field against No. 22 Houston last Saturday when trainers were working on Jenkins, who was dealing with cramps. Frost went with Kaleb Annett for one drive before Jenkins returned.
For now, UCF is focused on the long game with Marriott. He’s considered one of the biggest 2026 recruiting steals, and his dual-threat ability fits the offense Frost wants to run. That blend showed up a bit against Bethune-Cookman, and it was on display in a bigger way during his Missouri high school days.
At Platte County, Marriott piled up more than 10,000 career yards and 160 touchdowns.
The Knights are clearly investing in his growth, and Marriott is getting his first real taste of how much faster college football moves than the high school game. Mikey Keene was the last true freshman to start for UCF, doing so in 2021 and finishing with 1,730 yards, 17 touchdowns and five interceptions while filling in for Dillon Gabriel.
Marriott is still in the development phase, but UCF’s approach makes the picture pretty clear: they believe he can be the future face of the offense, and maybe sooner rather than later.

UCF Heads Into Another Ranked Test With Its Biggest Weakness Exposed
UCF is heading into another difficult stretch with little time to reset, and the task only gets harder on the road against No. 18 Oklahoma State. It is the second straight ranked opponent in a three-game run, and the Knights are trying to steady a defense that has already been stretched by injuries while also finding a way to snap an 11-game road losing streak.
The matchup brings more than just ranking pressure, too, because Oklahoma State has one of the countrys most dynamic quarterbacks in Drew Mestemaker, a projected NFL draft pick who can hurt defenses with both his arm and his legs. For UCF, the bigger question is whether the group can hold up long enough to stay in the game, especially with key contributors nursing injuries and the margin for error shrinking by the week. Scott Frost Faces Mounting Pressure As UCF Hits A Pivotal Stretch
With the season tightening and every week carrying more weight, Scott Frost finds himself in a familiar kind of pressure cooker at UCF. The Knights have had to work through injuries and defensive issues while trying to steady themselves in a stretch where performance matters almost as much as the scoreboard, and that has made the conversation around the program feel a little sharper than it did even a few weeks ago.
Quarterback uncertainty has only added to the tension, with Alonza Barnett III sidelined by a hamstring injury and backup Keyone Jenkins also battling cramps and minor injuries. Frosts job security may not be the point, at least not yet, but the next few games will say plenty about whether UCF can settle down or whether the pressure around the program keeps building. Former UCF Star RJ Harvey Is Doing Something Rare In Denver
RJ Harveys start in Denver has quickly made him one of the more interesting former UCF standouts to watch around the NFL. In just three games this season, the Broncos running back has already become a major part of their passing game, giving them a dual-threat option out of the backfield and showing why he has fit so naturally into Sean Paytons offense.
Now the next step is the one every back is chasing. Denver is getting ready to face the Los Angeles Chargers, and Harvey is still looking for his first touchdown of the season, a reminder that even with his early impact and growing role, there is still something meaningful left on the table.
