UCF wasted no time making its season opener look like a mismatch, piling up a school-record 73 points in a 73-6 rout of Bethune-Cookman on Thursday night at the Acrisure Bounce House.
The Knights didn’t just win comfortably. They set a new program mark for largest margin of victory at 67 points, and they matched the highest scoring total in school history.
It was the second time UCF has reached 73 points in the last decade, with the previous instance coming in the 2017 undefeated season against Austin Peay on Oct. 28.
The tone was set early, and Duke Watson delivered the first punch. The running back found a crease and turned it into a 64-yard touchdown, the second-longest run of his career behind a 68-yard burst against Stanford on Nov. 16, 2024.
UCF’s defense quickly got in on the action, too. On Bethune-Cookman’s first play of its next drive, Jayden Williams jumped a Tyler Jefferson pass and took it back 47 yards for a pick-six. Williams had help along the way, using blocking and open space before finishing the return with a dive into the end zone.
That left the Knights rolling with all the momentum, and Alonza Barnett III kept the offense moving. He led an 11-play, 85-yard drive that ended with his first touchdown in Black and Gold, a five-yard keeper on a read option called by Scott Frost in the red zone.
Barnett kept adding to the lead in the second quarter, finding Jonathan Bibbs for a 23-yard touchdown over the middle. His debut line was sharp: 11-for-18 for 158 yards. He also threw an interception late, when he overthrew his target and Jaden Davis came down with the pick.
"Nobody hated that pick more than me, especially offense rolling like that," Barnett said during the post-game press conference. "Just can't have things like that."
By then, the game had long since tilted UCF’s way, and the scoring kept coming. Keyone Jenkins threw a touchdown, while Agyeman Addae, Landen Chambers, Taevion Swint and Rocco Marriott combined for five rushing scores. Caleb Rollerson added the night’s second receiving touchdown.
Marriott’s one-yard touchdown was especially notable, as it tied a UCF school record for the most points scored in a single game at 73. It was also his first career touchdown in his college debut.
Bethune-Cookman avoided being shut out by scoring in the final seconds, but that was the only late blemish on a night when UCF’s offense looked every bit as explosive as advertised during the offseason.
The Knights now turn to a Week 2 matchup with Pittsburgh, a game widely viewed as one of the toughest on UCF’s schedule.
