UCF’s backcourt will be led by a pair of transfer guards, and both players have already earned the room’s trust.
On Monday, with the non-conference schedule nearing, Johnny Dawkins announced that Arturo Dean and Cayden Vasko were voted team captains. The Knights are leaning on two veteran guards to guide a roster that has been rebuilt again, with transfers mixed in alongside returners Riley Kugel, Carmelo Pacheco and John Bol.
Vasko arrives from Wofford with a reputation for doing a little bit of everything. At 6-foot-6, he gives UCF a bigger guard who can see the floor, make the right read and run the offense as a facilitator. He picked up All-SoCon Third Team honors last season after leading the Terriers in assists and finishing second on the team in steals.
The numbers underline how cleanly he plays. Vasko posted an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.85, which ranked fifth in the nation, a trait that should matter for a UCF team that had the turnover bug at times last season. He also brings reliability, having appeared in all 95 games of his college career and started 94 of them.
Dean gives the Knights another layer of stability, and he may be the leading candidate to start at point guard. He brings Big 12 experience and a defensive edge, even though he arrived late enough last December that he never got into games for UCF.
His résumé is strong. Dean spent two seasons at Florida International and one at Oklahoma State before landing with the Knights.
In 2023-24 at FIU, he led all of Division I in steals at 3.35 per game, and his 104 steals that season still stand as a program record. His career total of 185 thefts ranks third all-time.
Dean’s family connection also follows him to UCF. His younger brother, Mister Dean, joined him after earning Big South Freshman of the Year honors at USC Upstate. Mister Dean flashed scoring ability before getting hurt last season with Charleston, and Dawkins views him as one of the team’s higher-upside pieces with room to grow over time.
With Dean and Vasko setting the tone, UCF heads into the season with a deep, experienced guard group and plenty of options in the backcourt.

BYU Faces A Dangerous UCF Test With Unbeaten Start On The Line
BYUs win over Notre Dame sent the Cougars soaring in the AP Poll and set up one of the more intriguing games on the Week 8 slate against UCF. The matchup has plenty of appeal beyond the rankings, with Bear Bachmeiers play at quarterback drawing attention and BYUs overall profile getting a fresh round of scrutiny as the unbeaten start continues to gather momentum.
From UCFs side, there is at least a reasonable path to making this a much tougher night than the national perception suggests. The Knights have shown enough in the underlying numbers to make people around the betting market take notice, and the question now is whether they can turn that into a result that would shake up the top end of the college football conversation. UCFs BYU Upset Hopes Suddenly Hinge On One Bye Week Decision
The bye week arrived at a good time for UCF, with the Knights trying to line up as much help as possible before facing unbeaten BYU. Quarterback Alonza Barnett III, wide receiver Duane Thomas Jr. and linebacker Lewis Carter have all been working back from injury, giving Scott Frost and his staff a few important decisions to sort through as the matchup approaches.
Frost said Barnett is making really good progress, but he stopped short of saying whether the quarterback will be ready to start against the Cougars. Thomas and Carter are also in the mix as possible returnees after missing time, and their availability could shape both sides of the ball for a UCF team trying to find enough firepower and stability to challenge BYU. UCF Heads Into Huge BYU Test With One Big Offensive Reality
Alonza Barnett III will remain out when UCF takes on No. 2 BYU at home, leaving the Knights to lean once again on Keyone Jenkins under center in one of their biggest games of the season. Barnetts hamstring injury has kept him sidelined for weeks, and with UCF staring at a top-tier opponent, the quarterback situation is no longer a side note but one of the defining realities of the matchup.
Jenkins has steadied himself recently and given the offense a chance to stay competitive against quality competition, which matters even more now with BYU coming in ranked second. The Knights need that continued progress to translate into a cleaner, more efficient performance if they want to make the home setting count, and the pressure around his role only grows with Barnett still unavailable.
