UCF’s offense never found a rhythm in the wake of a rough night on the ground against Pittsburgh, and Scott Frost made it clear afterward that the Knights need more from their run game - and sooner.
The numbers told the story fast. UCF managed only 20 rushing yards on 22 carries in a 12-7 loss, with quarterback Alonza Barnett III finishing as the team’s leading rusher with just 12 yards. Barnett was shaken up late, though he was able to walk off the field on his own.
After the game, Frost pointed straight at the lack of production and the missed chances that came with it.
“We gotta do better… it’s kind of too late for that now. We just gotta call the best stuff we got and try to make some plays," Frost said. "We had some things there and didn’t hit em, credit to them their blitzes have worked and we haven’t run the ball.”
The challenge up front was obvious. UCF’s offensive line had trouble holding its ground against Pittsburgh’s size and strength, and the Panthers’ defense has been built to shut down the run for years. Pittsburgh ranked second last season at 95.1 rushing yards allowed per game, third in 2024 at 112.8, and eighth in 2023 at 150.2.
What made Saturday’s collapse sting more is that UCF had already shown real pop in Week 1. Against Bethune-Cookman, the Knights looked explosive and efficient on the ground, with Duke Watson, Landen Chambers, Agyeman Addae and Taevion Swint all reaching the end zone.
Watson, in particular, wasted no time making an impression in his UCF debut. His first touch went 64 yards for a touchdown, a burst that showed off the same breakaway speed and elusiveness that once helped him lead the country in yards per carry. He finished that game with 110 yards on just seven carries, and UCF rolled to 360 total yards while averaging 9.5 yards per carry.
That kind of production disappeared against Pittsburgh. Watson was held to 10 rushing yards, Swint finished with minus-1 yard on two carries, and Addae and Chambers never got a carry.
Now the focus shifts to Georgia State, where UCF will try to get back to efficiency in the run game and take pressure off Barnett. The Panthers have been stingy on the ground so far, allowing 77 rushing yards per game, though Kennesaw State did find the end zone against them this past week.

UCF went into Pittsburgh looking for a clean response on the road, and instead came away with another reminder of how stubborn that problem has become. The Knights fell 12-7 to the Panthers in their 2026 season game, a result that kept the offense bottled up enough to leave the margin thin and the frustration familiar.

A few of the teams waiting on Central Floridas 2026 schedule are already giving the Knights a better sense of what that fall might look like. Georgia State opened the conversation by beating Kennesaw State, while Oklahoma State added a much bigger jolt by knocking off Oregon, and Iowa handled Iowa State in another result that adds some weight to the nonconference and Power Four opponents sitting ahead on the calendar.
For UCF, the immediate note is that Georgia State is on the home slate and Oklahoma State is the road trip that could carry more intrigue than it did a few weeks ago. The Cowboys result against Oregon only sharpened the view of that matchup, even if there are still plenty of moving parts between now and then, and the broader picture is that the Knights 2026 schedule is starting to look less like a routine setup and more like one with real early tests.
