UCF’s defense opened Saturday looking in control, then watched the game slip away fast.
The Knights had Houston bottled up for most of the first half and into the third quarter, but once UCF’s offense started stalling, the defense kept getting handed bad situations. From there, the Cougars piled up 27 straight points over the final 18:38 and turned a solid start into a 27-17 loss.
Field position became a problem early. Houston’s first touchdown came on a one-play, two-yard drive after Conner Weigman was handed the ball near the goal line and finished it off for six. Meanwhile, UCF’s offense managed fewer than 20 yards across its next three possessions, and that left the defense under constant pressure.
The pass rush never really arrived. UCF finished with just one sack, split between two players, and only two tackles for loss against Houston’s run game and quick passing attack. That was a sharp drop from the TCU game, when the Knights were able to force Jaden Craig into bad decisions.
The secondary held up better than the front did. Houston never found the end zone through the air, and Weigman finished with 239 passing yards. But he still made life difficult for UCF by running for three touchdowns and adding 50 rushing yards.
Houston leaned on the ground game all afternoon, and it wore on the Knights. The Cougars ran the ball 44 times for 154 yards, using that pound-the-rock approach to keep UCF on its heels.
There is at least one possible boost coming for the defense. Getting Lewis Carter healthy would help against the run, though there is still no timetable for his return.
The schedule doesn’t give UCF much breathing room. The Knights head to Stillwater, OK, next week to face No.
18 Oklahoma State, a team that has averaged more than 46 points per game over its last three outings. After that, UCF comes home to play No.
8 BYU, the highest-ranked team in the Big 12.
Picking up one of those two wins would mean a lot for UCF’s resume and morale as the season moves deeper into conference play. And on Sunday, the Knights also got a roster boost: linebacker Cole Kozlowski was officially granted his fifth year of eligibility and will be able to finish the rest of the season.

UCF Suddenly Has A Bigger Concern Than The Houston Loss
The Houston loss ended up being only part of the concern for UCF, because the Knights came out of the game with a few health questions layered on top of the result. Quarterback Keyone Jenkins was dealing with cramps during the game, but he got treatment and returned, while wide receiver Josh Derry also worked through an ankle issue and was able to keep going in the second half.
The bigger concern centered up front, where center Jacob Maiava left with a hip injury and had X-rays afterward. With Maiava out, Cooper Terpstra had to step in at center, leaving UCF to sort out what the line looks like if the injury lingers and whether the offense can keep its stability after already absorbing one tough night in conference play. UCF's Road Problem Just Got More Frustrating
For much of the afternoon in Houston, UCF looked ready to turn a road trip into something useful, building a 17-0 lead midway through the third quarter against No. 20 Houston. The Knights had enough early control to make the game feel tilted in their favor, even with backup quarterback Keyone Jenkins trying to manage the offense under pressure.
Then the second half turned into the kind of collapse that keeps a road streak hanging around. UCFs offense stalled badly over its final five possessions, and Houston answered with Conner Weigman powering in three rushing touchdowns after halftime as the Knights watched another winnable game slip away on the road. UCF Just Got A Huge Defensive Boost At The Right Time
Cole Kozlowski is back in the mix for UCF at a time when the defense could use a lift. The linebacker has been cleared to play for the remainder of the 2026 season, giving the Knights a veteran presence as they navigate a linebacker group that has been dealing with injuries and a stretch of ranked opponents on the schedule.
For UCF, the timing matters as much as the name. Kozlowski brings experience and proven production to a unit that needs stability, and his return gives the Knights another trusted option in the middle of the defense as the games get tougher and the margin for error gets thinner. [Read more 🡒]
