UCF Football Hires Ex Cowboys Coach For Key Role

UCF Knights football strengthens its coaching staff with the NFL-acclaimed expertise of David Overstreet II, aiming for a transformative 2026 season.

The UCF Knights football program has made a strategic move by bringing in David Overstreet II as their new cornerbacks coach, completing Scott Frost's staff just in time for the 2026 season. Overstreet comes with a wealth of NFL experience, having recently served as a secondary and cornerbacks coach with the Dallas Cowboys. His professional background is a significant asset that Frost and his team are eager to leverage.

Overstreet's journey through the NFL began with the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, where he started as a defensive quality control assistant. He quickly moved up the ranks to become the assistant defensive backs coach by 2021.

During his time with the Colts, the team was a force in the secondary, racking up 64 interceptions, which tied them for third in the league during that period. His expertise was further honed with the Chicago Bears, where he spent three seasons.

There, he played a pivotal role in the development of Jaylon Johnson, who became a two-time Pro Bowl selection under his guidance.

"Bringing someone with David's NFL experience on board is a big win for us," said Frost. "He's been instrumental in developing young talent at the highest level, and our players are going to benefit immensely from his knowledge and experience."

This hiring follows the departure of former cornerbacks coach Will Johnson, who has joined the Minnesota Vikings staff. Overstreet's appointment fills a crucial gap as the Knights gear up for spring camp starting March 31.

Before making his mark in the NFL, Overstreet was part of the coaching staff at Garden City Community College in Kansas. There, he served as the defensive passing game coordinator and cornerbacks coach, leading the team to an NJCAA National Championship in 2016. His defensive acumen was evident as the team snagged 18 interceptions in 2017, ranking sixth nationally.

As a player, Overstreet showcased his skills with the Missouri Tigers from 2002-06, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors twice. His college career was marked by impressive stats, including 172 tackles, two interceptions, and a memorable 41-yard fumble recovery return for a touchdown.

The Knights are looking to improve on their 5-7 record from 2025, Frost's first season back at the helm in Orlando. They kick off the 2026 season on September 3 against the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at the Acrisure Bounce House, with hopes high for a strong start.
