UCF men’s basketball has its 2026-27 schedule in hand, and the home slate gives Knights fans plenty to circle right away.
Coach Johnny Dawkins’ group, which brings back center John Bol and guard Carmelo Pacheco, is trying to build on the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2019. The full schedule dropped Thursday afternoon after the Big 12 Conference released its league slate, and while the road trip list is no joke, there are six games in Addition Financial Arena that stand out.
The opener comes Nov. 2 against Florida Gulf Coast.
From there, one of the earliest games that jumps off the page is Yale. With road dates at Vanderbilt and Indiana also on the non-conference calendar, the Bulldogs look like the most intriguing test coming to Orlando in the early going. Yale won the Ivy League regular season title in 2025-26 and finished 74th in the NET rankings, well ahead of the rest of the conference.
James Jones had some turnover, losing All-Ivy League forwards Isaac Celiscar, the younger brother of former UCF defensive lineman Josh Celiscar, and Nick Townsend. But he still has guard Trevor Mullin, his top three-point threat, and Yale’s consistency is hard to miss: Jones has taken the Bulldogs to the postseason every year since 2018-19, including four NCAA Tournament trips.
Even with the season still young, that one looks like UCF’s best shot at a non-P4 upset in the building.
If fans are willing to make the drive, the Knights also have a neutral-site game against Georgia at the ESPN Wide World of Sports as part of the ESPN Events Invitational. UCF’s last trip to Disney World ended with a win over Florida Atlantic to close non-conference play.
Georgia comes in with its own tournament pedigree after an NCAA Tournament run in 2025-26 and a 33rd-place NET finish. Mike White, Danny White’s brother, brings back starters Blue Cain and Kanon Catchings, and he’s also added former UCF signee Donovan Williams Jr.
The Big 12 home games bring the heavyweight feel. Iowa State visits Addition Financial Arena as one of two teams coming off a Sweet 16 run last season.
T.J. Otzelberger has to replace All-Big 12 names like Joshua Jefferson and Milan Momcilovic, but he still has starting forward Blake Buchanan and added Leon Bond III, last season’s All-MVC Defensive Teamer at Northern Iowa.
Otzelberger has also reached the NCAA Tournament in every season he’s coached in Ames.
Houston is another marquee one. The Cougars, who return All-Big 12 Honorable Mention forward Joseph Tugler, are coming off a Sweet 16 appearance and will make their first trip back to Addition Financial Arena since UCF’s 69-68 loss on Jan.
18, 2025. That game carries extra weight because of how close the Knights came last time, the conference history between the schools dating back to 2005-2006, and the fact that it’s one of the biggest home dates on the schedule.
Texas Tech brings a different kind of intrigue on Feb. 20.
Former UCF forward Jamichael Stillwell could return to Addition Financial Arena if the legal fight over his eligibility breaks his way. He isn’t the only Red Raider in that situation, either: All-Big 12 Honorable Mention guard Donovan Atwell and forward Darrion Williams, a 2025 All-Big 12 First Teamer who is trying to get back to Texas Tech after last season at NC State, are also waiting on favorable rulings.
Grant McCasland still has a strong core regardless, with forward JT Toppin back and former Hofstra guard Cruz Davis, last season’s CAA Player of the Year, coming in from the portal. UCF beat Texas Tech in Orlando last season, but the Red Raiders look like a much more dangerous group this time.
BYU rounds out the list of must-see home dates. The Knights’ upset in Provo last season helped power their NCAA Tournament resume, and now the Cougars get a chance at revenge in Orlando. Robert Wright III, an All-Big 12 Third Teamer, is back for a team that produced the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft in AJ Dybantsa.

UCF Defense Has Become A Strength With One Big Problem Left
UCFs defense has quietly turned into one of the main reasons the Knights have been able to compete early this season. Over the past two weeks, opponents have averaged just nine points against a group that now sits second in the Big 12, and the improvement has been especially noticeable late in games. Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch has pointed to the units depth as a big part of that surge, with the Knights able to keep fresh bodies on the field and maintain their level when drives start to pile up.
The recent loss to Pittsburgh did not change the larger picture much, either, because UCF still held up well against a Power Four opponent and showed the kind of defensive backbone that can travel. Even so, the next step is obvious. The Knights have been difficult to score on, but they still want more takeaways as the season goes on, and that missing turnover punch remains the one piece keeping this defense from looking fully complete. Entering Week 3, the early Florida pecking order has already started to take shape, and it is not exactly flattering for UCF. Miami sits atop the states college football hierarchy in the ESPN Football Power Index, with Florida and Florida State also positioned ahead of the Knights as the rankings reflect both results and longer-range expectations. For a program trying to keep pace in a crowded in-state race, that kind of snapshot matters almost as much as what happens on the field each Saturday.
UCF has work to do not just in the Big 12 picture, but in the broader conversation about where it stands among Florida programs. The Knights have a path to get back into the mix, and the coming weeks will help define whether they can climb past some of the teams now sitting above them in the FPI.
