Mason Heintschel’s first college start was the kind of debut that can change the temperature around a team in a hurry.
The Pittsburgh quarterback carved up Miami (Ohio) for 453 yards and seven touchdown passes last week, tying the Pitt single-game record while setting an ACC mark in the Panthers’ 59-14 season-opening win. He completed 31 of 41 throws and was named Atlantic Coast Conference Quarterback of the Week after a performance that looked effortless on the stat sheet and even more complete in the flow of the game.
Now Pitt gets to see whether that opener was a launch point or just a one-night explosion. The Panthers are back home Saturday to face UCF, with both teams sitting at 1-0.
Heintschel did more than just light up the scoreboard. Seven different Pitt receivers caught his touchdown passes, and 10 players finished with at least one catch. That kind of distribution gave the Panthers a layered, hard-to-pin-down passing game from the start.
Pat Narduzzi was especially struck by how often his quarterback escaped trouble before delivering the ball.
"He's like a little magician back there," Narduzzi said. "Not only can he throw it, but he has that knack to make people miss and get out of trouble."
Pitt’s defense also opened with a strong showing, especially against the run. Miami (Ohio) managed only 28 yards on 21 carries, and that total wasn’t padded by a heavy sack count. The Panthers finished with just two sacks for 20 yards.
UCF arrives after a statement win of its own, though the level of competition was far different. The Knights hammered FCS opponent Bethune-Cookman 73-6 last Thursday, building a 38-0 lead by halftime and keeping the pressure on after the break.
Alonza Barnett III went 11 of 18 for 158 yards, while Louisville transfer Duke Watson ran for 110 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries. UCF piled up 560 total yards and held Bethune-Cookman to 181.
The challenge changes sharply this week. Pitt is a clear step up from Bethune-Cookman, and UCF also has a road issue hanging over it: the Knights have lost nine straight away from home since a Sept. 14, 2024 win at TCU.
"This is a completely different team, and we'll do the best we can to get them prepared and try to play our best," said UCF coach Scott Frost.
